4 Description and function

Ottobock has developed an advanced concept for an externally powered hand that is fundamen-
tally different from all its predecessors. The thumb and fingers of the Electrohand 2000 rotate
around the same axis. This motion permits objects to be grasped without having to make unnatu-
ral movements with the forearm and upper arm.
A special finger design makes it possible to hold pencils, eating untensils, etc. in a more natural
position.
The chassis has been covered with a plastic coating – both to achieve a minimal weight and to
eliminate the need for an inner hand.
The drive system for sizes 5½, 6 and 6½ consists of two motors. It has been constructed to
closely simulate a physiological grasping motion. Motor no. 1 opens and closes the hand with
high speed and minimal force. Thus, objects may be picked up with a gentle touch. With contin-
ued signal, power goes to motor no. 2 which increases prehension force to a maximum.
The drive mechanics are protected by a slip clutch allowing passive opening of the hand.
Size 5, in contrast to the other hand sizes, is driven by one motor. In addition, the hand can also
be passively opened by means of a spring. This makes prehension training for infants easier.
5 Fabrication of the prosthetic socket
For reasons of electrical safety carbon fiber layers should not be applied in one piece from the
wirst area up to the electrode area.
When combining the Electrohand 2000 with the 12K19=40 Elbow Set-Up for Children, use the
10S18=40 Lamination Ring for Child's Forearm (Instructions for Use: 647G408).
6 Assembly
6.1 Mounting the O-Rings (ill. 1)
The outside 623F3=26x1.0 O-Ring must always be in place. Friction for passive rotation may be
adjusted by the number of inner O-rings (2) placed in the wrist unit. It is a good idea to apply a
small amount of silicone grease on the O-rings.
6.2 Mounting the controller or the switch circuit
For details refer to the corresponding package insert.
6.3 Mounting the hand (ill. 2)
Rotate the knurled wrist ring clockwise until the outer O-ring is squeezed between the wrist ring
and the lamination ring.
6.4 Mounting the prosthetic glove
Attention !
Do not use Silicone Spray on the prosthetic glove!
