BEFORE YOU SET OFF...
Familiarise yourself with this owner's manual.
Always check the following before setting off:
*
Weather conditions and weather forecast
Consider the prevailing wind force, wave profile and visibility. Are your boat's
design category and size, as well the skills of the master and the crew,
sufficient for the waters you are heading to?
*
Load
Do not overload the boat. Make sure you balance the load correctly. To
maintain stability, heavy objects should be placed as low as possible.
*
Seating capacity
Make sure a life vest is available for everyone. Assign the tasks and duties of
each member of the crew before setting off.
*
Fuel
Make sure you have enough fuel, including a fuel reserve in case of adverse
weather conditions or unexpected situations. Make sure you have the correct
type of fuel.
*
Engine and equipment
Inspect the condition of the steering mechanism, electrical equipment and
battery and carry out the daily routine checks described in the engine manual.
Check the overall seaworthiness of the boat: the battery should be charged,
there should be no water or fuel leaks, and the boat's safety and rescue
equipment should be aboard. Remove any excess bilge water.
*
Ventilation
Ensure sufficient ventilation of the fuel compartments to reduce the risk of fire.
Make sure ventilation channels are unobstructed.
*
Lashing of cargo and stowage
Make sure all equipment, accessories and luggage items are stowed and will
stay securely in place, even in rough sea conditions and strong winds.
*
Charts
Unless you know your route thoroughly, make sure charts of a sufficiently
extensive area are available.
*
Preparations
Agree with your crew who unmoors which lines. Make sure that there is no
danger of the painter or any other lines becoming entangled with the propeller
during departure or arrival.
