EPWORTH SLEEPINESS SCALE
NOTE—Please read all instructions before proceeding.
The Epworth Sleepiness Scale Questionnaire is a tool used to assess your sleepiness and your benefit from using the bilevel CPAP regularly. The unit
will record and display the results of a patient-completed Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) at various intervals. The interval is determined by your home
medical equipment provider and/or physician. The ESS feature can be turned on or off by the health care provider at device set-up.
The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) is an eight-question sleepiness assessment that has four possible numerical answers for each question (0, 1, 2, or
3).
The questionnaire can be temporarily skipped by turning the blower OFF and then back ON. The unit must be off for two hours before ESS is displayed
again. For all eight (8) ESS questions, the keypad UP/DOWN buttons will be used to scroll through the possible answers (0, 1, 2, or 3), and the
SELECT button will be used to enter your answer and advance sequentially through the process. The eight (8) ESS questions that are to be answered
and the scale for your answers of 0 to 3 are provided on the next page and in a separate booklet. The questions are to be referenced as you proceed
through the ESS survey in steps 1 to 4 below. The question number is referenced on the bilevel CPAP LCD display.
If the ESS is enabled and due for completion, an ESS prompt will be shown on the LCD display when the blower is turned
ON Figure 11. In addition, the LCD back light will turn on and several short beeps will be sounded from the audible
indicator.
With the display as shown in Figure 11, press the SELECT button to proceed to ESS Q1. The display shown in Figure

NOTE—The bilevel CPAP will operate throughout the ESS assessment. The blower ON/OFF and DELAY keypad buttons will continue to function
regardless of the ESS prompts. If you do not answer the ESS, it will remain on the display for 15 minutes before timing out and being
removed. Any keypad activity will reset the 15-minute time-out period. Turning the blower OFF and then back ON will temporarily skip the
questionnaire; the unit must be off for two hours before ESS will be displayed again.
