7 Maintenance
Prior to maintenance or repair work turn off the pump
and ensure that it is not turned on by unauthorised
personnel.
In the event of high temperatures and high system
pressure, the pumps should be allowed to cool down
Danger of liquid boiling over!
7.1

Mechanical seal

During the breaking-in period it is possible that slight dripping
will occur. Regular checking is advised. Should clearly visible
leakages arise, it will be necessary to replace the seal.
Changing the mechanical seal (Fig. 10, 11):
– Turn off the pump and ensure that it is not turned on by un-
authorised personnel,
– Close shut-off valves before and after the pump,
– De-pressurise pump by opening the ventilation valve
(pos. 1.31).
Danger of hot liquids boiling over!
– Disconnect motor if the cable for dismantling the motor is too
short.
– Detach the pressure gauge lines of the pressure difference
sensor.
– Remove coupling guard (pos. 1.32.).
– Loosen coupling unit's coupling screws (pos. 1.5).
– Loosen motor fastening screws (pos. 5) on motor flange and
lift motor out of pump with suitable lifting gear.
On some IL-E pumps the adapter ring is hereby loosened
(Fig. 10, 11 pos. 8).
– By undoing the lantern fastening screws (pos. 4), remove lan-
tern unit with coupling, shaft, mechanical seal and impeller
from pump housing.
– Undo impelling fastening nut (pos. 1.11), remove underlying
washer (pos. 1.12) and remove impeller (pos. 1.13) from pump
shaft.
– Remove mechanical seal (pos. 1.21) from shaft.
– Pull coupling (pos. 1.5) with pump shaft out of lantern.
– Carefully clean shaft fitting/seating surfaces. If the shaft is da-
maged, this must also be replaced.
– Remove mechanical seal's counter-ring with packing from the
lantern flange and the O-ring (pos. 1.14) and clean the seal
seatings.

– Press new mechanical seal counter-ring with packing into the
seal seating of the lantern flange. Normal washing-up liquid
can be used as a lubricant.
– Fit new O-ring into the slot of the lantern's O-ring seating.
– Check coupling fitting surfaces, if necessary clean and lightly
oil.
– Preassemble coupling boxes with intermediate spacers on
the pump shaft and carefully insert the preassembled coup-
ling-shaft unit into the lantern.
– Slide new mechanical seal onto the shaft. Normal washing-
up liquid can be used as a lubricant.
– Assemble impeller with washer and nut, whilst countering on
outer impeller diameter. Avoid damaging the mechanical seal
by fitting askew.

ATTENTION!
(see 7.3)
– Carefully insert preassembled lantern unit into the pump hou-
sing and screw down. Whilst doing so hold the rotating parts
on the coupling to avoid damaging the mechanical seal.

ATTENTION!
(see 7.3)
– Loosen coupling screws slightly, open preassembled coup-
ling slightly.
– Fit motor with suitable lifting gear and screw down the lan-
tern-motor (and adapter ring on IL-E).
Observe prescribed screw tightening torque
ATTENTION!
(see 7.3)
– Slide fitting fork (Fig. 12 pos. 11) between lantern and coup-
ling. The fitting fork must be free from play.
– First gently tighten coupling screws until the coupling boxes
are on the spacers. Then screw coupling down uniformly. At
the same time the prescribed distance between lantern and
coupling of 5 mm is automatically set via the fitting fork.
Observe prescribed screw tightening torque
ATTENTION!
(see 7.3)
– Remove fitting fork.
– Re-fit pressure difference sensor's pressure gauge lines.
– Re-fit coupling guard.
– Re-connect motor cable.
7.2

Motor + module

High noise levels and unusual vibrations result in wear to the
bearing. In this case the bearing or motor must be replaced.
The motor/module unit should only be replaced by WILO Custo-
mer Service.
