Installation and Operating Instructions
CHAPTER 2
BASIC
INFORMATION
Roof fans – VDD T120
1.6

Personnel qualification

Electrical connections, electrical work and commissioning may only be carried out by qualified electricians.
Installation work may only be carried out by trained specialists (e.g. industrial mechanics, mechatronics engineers,
ventilation fitters or persons with comparable education.
2.1

Shipping

The delivery is packed ex works in such a way that it is protected against normal transport strain. The shipping must
be carried out carefully.
When transhipping (especially over longer distances, e.g. sea routes), check if the packing is adequate for method and
manner of transportation. Damages due to improper transportation, storage or commissioning must be verified and are
not liable for warranty.
The fan must be kept in the casing or the provided lifting lugs (over Ø 450) for transportation or installation. In this re-
spect, only use appropriate lifting equipment and fastening devices. Weight information can be found on the label on
the unit.
2.2

Receipt

The shipment must be checked for damage and correctness immediately upon delivery. If there is any damage, prompt-
ly report the damage with the assistance of the transport company. If complaints are not made within the agreed period,
any claims could be lost.
2.3

Storage

It is recommended to leave the unit in the original packaging before installation to prevent any possible damage and
contamination.
When storing for a prolonged time the following measures should be taken to avoid damaging influences:
• Protection by dry, air-tight and dustproof packaging (plastic bags with drying agent and moisture indicators).
• The storage place must be waterproof, vibration-free and free of excessive temperature variations.
The storage temperature in the range from -20 °C to +40 °C must not be exceeded. In case of a storage period of more
than three months or motor standstill, the bearings must be inspected before commissioning. In this respect, the silent,
free movement of the impeller must be checked.
Damages due to improper transportation, storage or commissioning are not liable for warranty.
2.4

Air-flow direction and direction of rotation

The fans have a fixed motor direction of rotation which is marked on the units by an arrow. Reverse operation is not
possible. An incorrect direction of rotation can lead to the overheating and destruction of the fan!
2.5

Speed control

The fan speed can be controlled as follows:
• Transformer (accessories)
All fans up to Ø 450 mm can be voltage controlled via a transformer.
• Frequency converter (accessories)
All fan speeds can be controlled via a frequency converter with a sine filter. The use of a frequency converter without
a sine filter is only possible with release approval from Helios.
ⓘ   The use of other brands, especially other electronic devices, can lead to the malfunctioning and even destruc-
tion of the controller and/or fan. Warranty and liability claims shall be void if controllers which have not been
approved by the manufacturer are used.
2.6

Motor protection device

• Thermal contact (built-in)
All motors in fans Ø 315, Ø 355 and Ø 400 (6-pole) are equipped with built-in thermal contacts, which automatically
deactivate when the motor temperature is too high and reactivate after cooling down.
• Thermal contacts (wired on terminals)
All 3 phase motors in fans Ø 400 (4-pole) and Ø 450 (4-pole and 6-pole) have thermal contacts wired on terminals.
The specifically developed motor protection devices MD (accessories) are recommended for connection.
• PTC thermistors (wired on terminals)
All motors in fans over Ø 500 have PTC thermistors wired on terminals. The specifically developed full motor pro-
tection switch MSA (accessories) is recommended for connection.
2.7

Protection against contact

Contact with rotating parts must be avoided. It must be ensured that there must be no persons, textiles or other mate-
rials that could be sucked up, such as clothing, located in the intake area.
Protection against contact may be necessary on the suction side depending on the installation conditions.
Fans which are protected by their installation method (e.g. installation in ventilation ducts or closed assemblies) do not
require protection guards if the plant provides the necessary level of safety. Please note that the operator is responsi-
ble for complying with the current standard (DIN EN 13857) and can be held liable for accidents as a consequence of
missing protection systems.
