Adjusting the rear wheel in the rear wheel adapter (Fig. 42)
Each change of position of the quick-release axle housing in the rear wheel has an influence on the posterior
seat height and the center of gravity! The relation of anterior and posterior seat height represents the individual
seat inclination.
The higher you attach the rear wheel in the rear wheel adapter, the more the seat pitches down. This has two
effects: First, the wheelchair has a greater tendency to tilt backwards; second, the user sits deeper in the
wheelchair and thus has more stability.
• Loosen the nut (Fig. 42, item A) of the quick-release axle housing (Fig. 42, item B) on the inside of the frame,
until the tapered washers can be spread apart slightly. Now you can move the quick-release axle housing with
nuts and tapered washers into the desired position. Let the lug of the tapered washers engage in the new desired
position and firmly re-tighten the nut (Fig. 42, item A). The torque for the hexagon nuts (Fig. 42, items A, C) is 50
Nm.
• Make sure that the position of the tapered camber washers is not changed.
• Make sure that both the left and right rear wheel attachment devices are set in the same vertical position.
• Please note that due to the change in the rear wheel position, the angle of the caster axle in relation to the
ground will also change. This angle, however, should always be approx. 90°. The wheel lock must be re-
adjusted as well.
Note: The distance between rear wheel and side panel can be continuously adjusted by adjusting the counter
nut (Fig. 42, item C) at the outside of the frame.
Make sure to firmly retighten all screws and nuts after making adjustments!
Adjusting the wheel camber
The Avantgarde modular system provides a rear wheel adapter which can be used to set the rear wheels at
different camber angles (0°, 2°, 4°, 6° and 8°). The greater the negative camber angle of the rear wheels, the more
maneuverable and stable the wheelchair becomes. A negative camber improves lateral guidance when turning but,
on the other hand, causes stronger wear of the tires on the inner side of the tread as well as stronger stress on the
rim. Furthermore, a large negative camber has an unfavorable effect on the directional stability of the wheelchair. With
large negative camber a seat inclination of 0° is recommended!
The rear wheel adapter itself is set to a wheel camber of 2° due to its form. Deviations from this setting (such as 0°,
4°, 6° or 8°) are achieved by rotating the special 2° tapered washers. For 6° and 8° setting it can be necessary to add
tapered washers. These settings are generally handled by the manufacturer. Deviations dependent on the wheel size
and tire diameter (as well as due to the use of height adjustable armrests) may occur.
