6. Charging the Superconductors

Procedure
Before plugging in the machine, follow the
steps below.
A. If the drive unit is transported or stored
in colder temperatures than the operating
environment it is necessary to wait 2 hours
to equalize the internal temperatures of the
drive unit before turning it on.
B. Ensure that the adjustable speed drive
toggle switch is in the OFF (down) position
and the RPM control knob is turned to
zero (0), and remains in this position until
charging is complete.
C. Remove protective shield from magnetic
charger and place magnetic charger with
bearing in the receiving cavity on the
levitation head.
D. Identify the main power button on the
control box:
Connect the superconducting drive unit to
a standard 230 V 50|60 Hz. power source,
lift the clear plastic shield over the red main
power button, and push the button IN so
that it is illuminated. The RPM readout
panel will not illuminate until charging is
complete (35 minutes), at which time it
should read 0 RPM. Ensure that electrical
power remains connected to the machine
even after charging is complete. To prevent
accidental shut-off of the drive unit, keep
the clear plastic shroud down to cover the
main power button.
Do not use alternative spacing|separating
devices when charging the drive. Use only
the magnetic charger provided in the kit.
While drive unit is charging, you can contin-
ue with Dolly – Tank Assembly (Section 7).
A. After the drive unit has charged for
35 minutes, lift the magnetic charger
and replace the protective shield on the
magnetic charger.
B. Remove the protective shield from the
test impeller and place the test impeller on
the levitation head. At this point it should
levitate freely above the surface of the
levitation head. This will indicate that the
machine is ready for operation.*
C. Test for true rotation of levitated test
impeller by moving the switch on the
control box to the ON position and turn
the RPM Regulator Knob clock-wise and
set the arrow at 50. The levitated impeller
will spin. The levitation gap must remain
uniform (no wobbling of the impeller)*.
D. Move the switch on the control box to
the OFF position and then remove the test
impeller. (Do not try to remove the test
impeller while it is spinning.) Replace the
protective shield on the test impeller. The
unit is now ready to be placed under the
mixing tank to begin mixing.

Always put the protective shield
back on the magnetic charger when
charging procedure is complete.
* If the test impeller does not levitate or
substantial wobbling takes place (more
than 1mm change in gap) the system
must be reset. Turn the system off for
25 minutes and repeat set up procedure.
