7. Some Information on UV Radiation

a) Effects of UV radiation
Next to visible light the sun also emits other radiation, which cannot be captured by the human eye.
Whilst the visible light has a wave length of approx. 400-760nm, UV radiation has approx. 100-380nm
less. The following applies: The shorter the wave length, the stronger the damaging effect of the UV
radiation on the skin.
UV radiation is divided into three categories:
• UVA (315-380nm)
This radiation (about 95% of the entire UV radiation that reaches the earth's surface) leads to
instant tanning but it only lasts for a little while. There is virtually no sunburn; there is no protective
layer built up by the skin.
Since the UVA radiation reaches quite deep into the skin tissue, this leads to skin aging and
wrinkling.
Sensitive skin can show a rash or similar and long-term, there is an increased danger of skin
cancer.
• UVB (280-315nm)
The remaining part of the UV radiation that hits the earth's surface (approx. 5%), causes a slow
but long-lasting tan. The skin builds up a protective layer.
UVB radiation leads quite quickly to sunburn, which may cause late damage such as skin cancer.
• UVC (100-280nm)
This short-wave radiation does not reach the earth's surface because it is absorbed by the
atmosphere.
Please note:
The effects of UV radiation on the skin depends on many different factors. It not only
depends on the duration and skin type but also, for example, on the sky cover, the position
of the sun (eg midday), the time of the year, the altitude of the place, the environment
(reflexion or scattering on water, sand or snow increases effect), clothing worn and
possibly used sunscreen lotion.
This is why it is hardly possible to determine how long you can stay in the sun, without
having it having a negative effect. Every skin is different.
You can find more information on the Internet or in corresponding books; your doctor or
pharmacist should also be able to help you.
