According to the Recommendations on Quality Assurance of Tap Water
Iontophoresis; Deutsche Dermatologische Gesellschaft (German Dermatological
Society):

Metal objects (bracelets, rings etc.) are to be removed from the area of skin
which is to be treated before treatment begins. Small, superficial wounds are to
be covered using Vaseline.
»
The filling level of the water bath should be measured out in such a way that,
when hands or feet are inserted, only the palms of the hands or soles of feet and
toes and fingers are covered by the water.
»
Use strictly mains water without any prior demineralisation treatment.
»
Treatment should last 10 to 15 minutes using a constant polarity.
»
The treatment should first be carried out every day (Monday to Friday) or at least
three times a week (Monday-Wednesday-Friday). Polarity is established so that
the leading hand (for right-handed users, the right hand) is connected to the
anode (plus pole, red plug), as this is where the effect is first activated. Once the
side which has been treated by the anode shows the desired therapy effects,
re-start treatment with reversed polarity so that both extremities show equal
signs of the desired therapy effect.

In subsequent therapy sessions, change the direction of the current by changing
the polarity with each treatment.

To retain the success level of the treatment, further treatment should be carried
out on a weekly basis or once/twice every 14 days.

The soles of the feet are treated in exactly the same way as in the above
description for the treatment of the palms of the hands.

For treatment of the armpits, use the moistened sponge electrodes.
