Our model features so-called double planking. Double planking means double work. In
return you get a hull that is much easier to build and a lot more durable and warp-free due
to double gluing. The inside planking is made from 1,5 x 5 mm strips.
Start with the planking at the height of the deck line and attach the first strip to the middle
frames 9 and 10 with one pin each. Join the strip to the frames towards the front. Shorten
the strip so that it can be snugly joined to the stem as per fig. 7 and page 1. It juts out over
the deck somewhat sternwards and will be cut to length only later. The following strips will
be glued under the deck end up to the middle. If the planking strip is too brittle and won't
bend soften it in hot water before the planking procedure and prebend it. Practical small
strip benders (Krick Cat. No. 60612) are available in specialised stores. It is not necessary
to have the inside planking follow the deck sheer, i.e. the deck line, exactly. Attach the
first strip to the individual frames with wire pins or steel pins and glue them with wood or
rapid glue. Use rapid glue and you might even do without the pins. In that case the glue
drop must be so small it sets immediately. Alternate left and right when planking the strips
since the hull might otherwise warp. Since the frames are smaller towards stern and bow
the planks must taper towards the front and back. Draw the necessary taper when you lay
the strip, take it off the hull again and remove the necessary sliver with a ruler and a knife.
Have you attached the first planks? You will find it is not as difficult as you might assume
from reading this. Strip planking takes patience above all and a good eye for the natural
line of the planks. Be sure of a good fit between strips but do not press together the planks
since the hull might warp.
Now that you have attached the inside planking from the deck on down you must move
in a special way with the planking towards the top. The upper planks that are to make up
the rim or bulwark are not glued to the frames but attached temporarily with pins. They do
get glued to one another, though. Start with these planks along the top edge of all frames.
You have now set the exact line of the bulwark.
Carefully glue the strips of the bulwark to one another and let it all set. The bulwark must
later stand without support by the frames. At the bow these strips join the stem while at
the stern they are still protruding.
When you have completed the inside planking sand down the hull. At this time you can
still make up for possible bulges or dents by sanding or filling with putty. This is a decisive
advantage of double planking since corrections are still possible.
Begin with the outside planking with the strips 17 at the upper edge. These strips must
also be bent edgewise, following the deck sheer. It is not necessary to soak these thin
strips. Attach the first strip with rapid glue in the middle of the hull at the upper bulwark
edge. Wait until it is set and continue attaching step by step first towards the front then
sternwards. With a strip width of 3 mm edgewise bending poses no problem.
You can also attach the outside planking with the cheaper wood glue. To do this you will
need pins to hold the planks in place until the glue has set. Draw several vertical lines on
the hull that roughly follow the arrangement of frames, spaced 5 to 6 cm apart. Since the
