Assembly Instruction for „Karl und Marie"
Dear ship Model Builder,
we cannot know whether you already are a ship model builder or whether you just are
about to become one. In either case you should study the assembly plan carefully before
you undertake the rewarding task of laying a 19th century Baltic Sea galeass ship on keel.
Let yourself be guided by this assembly plan, move step by step, and do not rush. The
building of historical ship models is a hobby that affords relaxation and satisfaction for
many hours. As a result you will have created a historically correct model that you may
proudly present to your friends. The galeasses in Northern Europe were freight ships. The
hull was therefore not as slender as that of the tea clippers. The rigging with fore-and-aft
sails was geared to fulfilling transport duties as safely as possible with a small crew. Ship-
ping on wooden sailing boats was hard work in wind and weather, a fight against waves
and salt water. Your model will look considerably more beautiful and better maintained
than the original of its day and so will communicate seafaring romance from the Golden
Age of sailing ships. Before you start with the construction work please heed our advice:
Only by moving systematically step by step will your result be a handsome model!
In case you do not yet own tools for model construction you will find below a list of the
most important tools that you should buy:
Craft knife: Suited best is a so-called balsa knife with interchangeable blades.
Several files: One warding file each square, flat, and round with rough cut will
suffice for the beginning.
Fret saw: Not needed in times of laser cut model kits, but still always a very helpful tool.
Please buy a good steel tubing fret saw frame. Frames made from
sheet metal strips aren't very practical.
Fret saw blades: Teething 0 and 1 for wood and metal.
Fret saw board with vise: Here you should look for a sturdy vise which should
not be made out of too thin sheet metal.
Sand paper files: Cut 30 x 200 mm strips out of 5 mm thick plywood and tape
sandpaper with a range of grain sizes onto them.
Ruler: For the beginning, a wooden ruler of 30 cm length will do.
A steel ruler would be better.
Strip bending device: You can try to do without it.
We recommend Cat. No. 60612.
Rapid glue: 20 g super glue Cat. 44050
Wood glue: UHU Holz 75g, Cat. No. 48560
Epoxide glue: Krick „Epoxi-Rapid", Cat. No. 80479.
Pine strip: 1 meter 5 x 5 or 5 x 10 mm for your slip board.
Plywood: 4 or 5 mm: Several pieces ca. 6 x 6 cm large.
Slip board as described below:
