Please ensure that you read any specifi c references in this user
guide that apply to your product type. Use the following list to
identify your product type:
APAP—S8™ AutoSet™ devices
CPAP—all other S8 devices (except S8 AutoSet)
Bilevel—VPAP™ IV and VPAP™ IV ST devices.
Indications for Use
Your device is intended for home and hospital use.
CPAP
Your continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device is
indicated for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in
adult patients.
APAP
Your self-adjusting sleep apnoea device is indicated for the
treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in adult patients. The
self-adjusting sleep apnoea device has two treatment modes:
AutoSet and fi xed-pressure CPAP .
Bilevel
Your bilevel ventilator device is intended to provide noninvasive
ventilation for patients with respiratory insuffi ciency or obstructive
sleep apnoea (OSA).
Contraindications
Positive airway pressure may be contraindicated in some patients
with the following conditions:
pneumothorax or pneumomediastinum
pathologically low blood pressure, particularly if associated
with intravascular volume depletion
cerebrospinal fl uid leak, recent cranial surgery or trauma
severe bullous lung disease
dehydration.
Adverse Effects
You should report unusual chest pain, severe headache or
increased breathlessness to your prescribing physician. An
acute upper respiratory tract infection may require temporary
discontinuation of treatment.
The following side effects may arise during the course of therapy
with the fl ow generator:
drying of the nose, mouth or throat
bloating
ear or sinus discomfort
eye irritation
skin rashes
nosebleed.
Masks and Humidifi ers
Recommended masks and humidifi ers are available from
your place of purchase. For information on using your mask
or humidifi er, refer to the manual supplied with your mask or
humidifi er.
Setting up your Flow Generator
Refer to illustration A on page 1.
1.
Connect the power cord to the socket at the rear of the fl ow
generator.
2.
Plug the other end into a power outlet.
3.
Connect the air tubing to the air outlet of the fl ow generator.
4.
Connect the assembled mask system to the free end of the
air tubing.
WARNING
Make sure the power cord and plug are in good condition
and the equipment is not damaged.
Only ResMed air tubing should be used with the device.
A different type of air tubing may alter the pressure you
actually receive and reduce the effectiveness of your
treatment.
Blocking the tubing and/or air inlet of the device while in
operation could lead to overheating of the device.
Always use the ResMed Oxygen Connector Port for a VPAP
IV or VPAP IV ST device when adding supplemental oxygen
at the fl ow generator outlet.
CAUTION
Be careful to place the device where it cannot be bumped,
and where no one will trip over the power cord.
If you put the device on the fl oor, make sure the area is free
from dust and clear of bedding, clothes or other objects
that could block the air inlet.
Make sure the area around the device is dry and clean.
Flow Generator Control Panel
Refer to illustration B on page 1.
The control panel has the following items: (1) Start/Stop; (2) LCD
screen; (3) Up and Down keys; (4) Left key; (5) Right key.
Starting Treatment
1.
Make sure the power is on. If fi tted, turn the main power
switch at the back of the unit to on (I).
2.
Lie down and arrange the air tubing so that it is free to move if
you turn in your sleep.
3.
To start treatment, press
up to start delivering therapy automatically (SmartStart™/Stop).
If so, your device will start when you breathe into your mask.
4.
Fit your mask as described in the mask user instructions.
WARNING
A mask should not be used unless the fl ow generator is
turned on and operating properly.
CAUTION
Do not leave long lengths of air tubing around the top of your
bed. They could twist around your head or neck while you are
sleeping.
Stopping Treatment
To stop treatment at any time, remove your mask and press
if your device has SmartStart/Stop enabled, simply remove your
mask and treatment will end.
Using the Menus
Key Functions
Up and Down keys: Scrolls through menus and setting options.
Left key: Enters menus; changes options; applies settings.
Right key: Exits menu; cancels operation.
Menu Settings
Some menu items may not be available on your model.
Ramp: Period during which the fl ow generator increases from a
low pressure to the prescribed treatment pressure.
Settling: Period during which the fl ow generator maintains a
minimum pressure before adjusting pressure in response to
respiratory events.
EPR Level: Expiratory pressure relief can be used to ease any
discomfort when breathing out during treatment. Options: OFF
(no EPR) – 3 (highest EPR).
Altitude: Selects the altitude range.
Mask: Selects your mask type.
Tube Length: Selects the length of air tubing.
Humidifi er: Selects the type of humidifi er used with your fl ow
generator.
SmartStart/Stop: Turns the SmartStart/Stop function on or off.
Leak Alert/Mask Alarm: If enabled, sounds an alarm when a high
mask leak is detected.
Language: Selects the LCD display language.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Daily:
Disconnect the air tubing and hang it in a clean, dry place until
next use.
