10. Technical information

Serial Number Location (Fig. 28)
Record the engine serial number, type and purchase
date in the spaces below. You will need this informa-
tion when ordering parts and when making technical
or warranty inquiries.
Engine serial number:
__ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __
Engine type: ___ ___ ___ ___
Date Purchased: ______ / ______ / ______
Battery connections for electric starter (Fig. 20)
(applicable types)
Use a 12-volt battery with an ampere-hour rating of
at least 18 Ah.
Be careful not to connect the battery in reverse
polarity, as this will short circuit the battery charg-
ing system. Always connect the positive (+) battery
cable to the battery terminal before connecting
the negative (-) battery cable, so your tools cannot
cause a short circuit if they touch a grounded part
while tightening
the positive (+) battery cable end.
m WARNING
A battery can explode if you do not follow the correct
procedure, seriously injuring anyone nearby.
Keep all sparks, open flames, and smokingmaterials
away fromthe battery.
WARNING: Battery posts, terminals, and related ac-
cessories contain lead and lead compounds. Wash
hands after handling.
1. Connect the battery positive (+) cable to the
starter solenoid terminal (21a) as shown.
2. Connect the battery negative (-) cable to an
engine mounting bolt, frame bolt, or other good
engine ground connection.
3. Connect the battery positive (+) cable to the bat-
tery positive (+) terminal as shown.
4. Connect the battery negative (-) cable to the bat-
tery negative (-) terminal as shown.
5. Coat the terminals and cable ends with grease.
Remote control linkage (Fig. 22/27/29)
The throttle and choke control levers are provided
with holes for optional cable attachment. The fol-
lowing illustrations show installation examples for
a solid wire cable and for a flexible, braided wire
cable. If using a flexible, braided wire cable, add a
return spring as shown.
It is necessary to loosen the throttle lever friction nut
when operating the throttle with a remote-mounted
control.

Carburetor modifications for high altitude opera-
tion
m NOTE
When the carburetor has been modified for high al-
titude operation, the air-fuel mixture will be too lean
for low altitude use. Operation at altitudes below
1,500 meters with a modified carburetor may cause
the engine to overheat and result in serious engine
damage. For use at low altitudes, have your servic-
ing dealer return the carburetor to original factory
specifications.
Oxygenated fuels
Some conventional types of petrol are mixed with
alcohol or an ethanol compound. The collective
term for these kinds of petrol is „oxygenated fuel".
Oxygenated fuels are used in some parts of the USA
and Canada to comply with clean air standards.
If you use an oxygenated fuel, make sure that it is
unleaded and has the minimum requisite octane
rating.
Before using an oxygenated fuel, check its composi-
tion. In some states / areas, this information has to
be displayed on fuel pumps.
The following lists the EPA-approved percentages of
oxygenated fuel components:
ETHANOL
(ethyl or grain alcohol) 5 Vol %
Petrol comprising 5 vol % ethanol can be used.
Petrol containing ethanol may be marketed under
the name gasohol.
MTBE
( methyl tert-butyl ether) 15 vol %
Petrol comprising 15 vol% MTBE can be used.
METHANOL
(methanol or wood alcohol) 5 vol
% Petrol comprising up to 5 vol% methanol can be
used, provided it also contains co-solvents and cor-
rosion inhibitors to protect the fuel system.
Petrol containing over 5 vol% methanol can cause
difficult starting and/or disrupt engine performance.
It can also damage metal, rubber and plastic parts in
the fuel system.
If your engine exhibits undesirable operating symp-
toms, try a different filling station or change the
brand of petrol.
Fuel system damage and performance problems
caused by the use of an oxygenated fuel with higher
percentages of oxygenates than specified above are
not covered by the warranty.
