General explanations
5. 1
Cold test current
If specified on the battery, the cold test current (A) has
priority over the nominal capacity (Ah) when setting the
current selector switch (10).
The tester permits an approximate function test of the
alternator and governor in automobiles by the voltage
indication on the voltmeter. (Display selector switch set to
position',,A").
5.2
Influence of the actual battery condition on the
test result:
5.2. 1 New batteries
The full capacity of new batteries is achieved only after
several charging/discharge cycles. For this reason, dry-
precharged batteries should not be tested immediately after
filling with acid. If this is done, the display will remain
under 100%.
5.2.2 Test after previous battery charging
Batteries which have been charged for a long period directly
before testing normally initially produce more favorable
results independent of age and condition. The actual
condition becomes evident only after a rest period or load
phase. The test should be performed at the earliest after a
rest period of 1 h, particularly after a long period of charging
with a mains charger. If the battery is installed in the motor
vehicle and charged as a result of a long journey, it is possible
to counteract the above effect by testing twice.
5.2.3 Exhausted batteries
Long standing times in discharged condition can lead to
permanent damage of starter batteries. Intermediate char-
ging must take place if the discharge process has gone so
far that testing is no longer possible. For this purpose, the
battery should be charged for approx. 1/2 hour with a rapid
charger with voltage limitation function. Longer charging
before testing does not offer any advantages.

5.2.4 Water consumption
Water from the battery electrolyte is consumed during
charging and when the automotive starter battery is under
high load.
Sealed batteries are provided with sufficient fluid for their
whole service life at the time of manufacture.
If the "Charging condition" display should be significantly
above 100 % for batteries with an operating period of up
to approx. 2 years, this may point to excessive water con-
sumption as a result of external influences, e.g. improper
external charging from the mains supply or an excessively
high alternator voltage in the vehicle's electrical system.
In the case of older batteries, on the other hand, water
consumption is the result of the above described process
of natural ageing.

Fault indication

Red LED (2) lights up - wait for cooling. It is probable that
several tests have been perfor¬med successively without
allowing for the cooling time (5 minutes.).
Red LED (6) indicates that the battery cannot be tested
because it is excessively exhausted. Perform intermediate
charging and then connect again for testing. Also refer to
Section 5.2.3 "Exhausted batteries".
