Changing starter cord and spring
(fig. 12–16)
Remove starter assembly.
Ease the tension on the starter spring by (fig. 12):
• pulling out 40 cm of the cord.
• placing the cord in the pulley notch (A).
• releasing slowly.
Remove lock ring and lift out the pulley with spring
and cord (fig. 13).
Fit the new cord (fig. 14).
If the starter spring must be rewound, place the
spring-hook in the pulley groove and wind on the
spring anti-clockwise (fig. 15). If the spring must be
replaced, position the spring-hook above the groove
in the starter pulley. Leaving the safety ring in place,
press down the spring into the starter pulley.
Always wear industrial grade gloves and eye pro-
tection when rewinding or replacing the starter
spring.
Wind up the starter cord onto the pulley leaving 5 cm
of slack. Locate the end of the spring in the bushing
groove, press the starter pulley onto the bushing.Re-
place lock ring (fig. 16).
Pre-tension the starter spring:
• position the notch in the pulley in line with the
cord guide
• place the cord in the notch
• rotate the pulley 1 turn anti-clockwise
• let the cord wind up slowly onto the pulley
• pull starter handle, check function
Important
Pull out the starter cable, at the same time grip
the starter disc and check that it can be turned
anticlockwise another ½ turn. If not, the spring
has been overtightened and is touching the
bottom, and the starter cable must be loosened
a turn
Fit starter assembly. Check function.
Carburettor (fig. 17)
The carburettor nozzles are preset in the factory, and
need only be adjusted in exceptional circumstances.
The idling needle (A) and high speed needle (B),
are fitted with rotation stops, which permit fine ad-
justment of max + 0.25 turns.
Incorrect adjustment can lead to damage in the ma-
chine.
The machine rpm should be measured with filter
cover mounted.

Full speed when the machine is loaded should be
5800-6200 r.p.m. for the Cobra mk1 and 6500±100
r.p.m. for the Cobra TT when using a tamping tool
on a bed of sand or earth.
The on-load speed of the machine can be adjusted
by means of screw (C).
The machine is equipped with an electronic over-
speed regulator. Therefore the engine runs unevenly
at fullspeed without load . This does not mean that
the carburettor has incorrect setting.
Fault finding
If the machine does not start, is difficult to start, runs
unevenly or has bad output, check the maintenance
points mentioned above.
Should the machine still not function correctly, con-
tact your nearest Cobra service-shop.
Any unauthorized use or copying of the contents or any part
thereof is prohibited. This applies in particular to trademarks,
model denominations, part numbers and drawings.
