It is too late to consider those points during a fire.
Although fires in apartments are relatively rare in Europe, there
are many causes for such fires, e.g. defective electrical devices,
amateurish electrical installations, but also children playing with
fire or forgotten candles.
Prefabricated constructions with a lot of wooden elements present
more risks than conventional constructions made of stone. The
danger is however similar due to carpets, wooden ceilings, wooden
floors, furniture, curtains etc.
Flames are less dangerous than the toxic smoke generated
by a fire.
The best escape plan does not help if other family members are not aware
of its existence or if they do not know what they are supposed to do in
case of a fire alarm.
• Organize a family meeting in order to discuss the escape plan.
• Explain to each person what he/she has to do in case of a fire or a smoke
alarm.
• Decide of a location outside the house where you can all meet after
escaping. This helps you to check if someone is missing.
• Get all family members familiar with the acoustic signal of the smoke alarm.
• Train your family members every 6 months as to what to do in case of a
fire or a smoke alarm. Get acquainted with the use of a fire extinguisher
or a safety blanket.
