The installation of the smoke detector in the following rooms can be
problematic:
• Kitchen/bath: False alarm due to kitchen steam or high humidity
• Garages: False alarm due to exhaust gases from cars, motorcycles or other
combustion engines
• Living spaces with an open fire place: False alarm due to escaping smoke
• Dusty and dirty living spaces: A dirty measuring metering chamber
causes the deterioration of the sensitivity of the smoke detector. The alarm
sets off later or not at all.
• Places with strong air movement: Late smoke identification and late
alarm due to the proximity to windows, ventilators, fans, lamps, lamp tubes,
halogen transformers, radiators, fire places.
• The proximity of metal/electrical devices: Deterioration of the radio range
due to steel beams, big metal surfaces, metal doors, televisions, power
cables etc.
• Smoke from tobacco: False alarm due to the fact that the detector cannot
differentiate between "harmless" tobacco smoke and a real fire.

Some smoke detectors are equipped with a sensitivity calibration.
This, however, has the disadvantage, that in case of a "real" fire,
the alarm is set off later which shortens the reacting time. It
shortens the time that can be used for extinguishing the fire, for
saving human lives or for escaping!
