When mounted in a room, this should always take place in the centre of the
ceiling.
When mounting in pointed roof space, the smoke alarm may not
be fixed at the uppermost point of the roof space as here there
is hardly an air movement. Mounting on a roof beam or a boom
would be ideal.
Close to the walls and, in particular,
in the corners of rooms and in the
case of sharp-angled ceilings, air
collects which keeps the smoke from
rising. It therefore takes much longer
until the smoke alarm recognises
smoke and triggers the alarm.
The smoke alarm should be mounted
at least 60 cm from the corners of the
room, see illustration 3.
Otherwise the smoke alarm
would have almost no effect
in the case of fire and only
then trigger the alarm when
the smoke concentration
becomes very strong!
The time available to save
yourself and others or to
extinguish the fire is in this
case curtailed drastically.
In maintaining these
distances from the corners
of the room, smoke alarms
can also be mounted on the
walls.
Please note:
Window sills, curtains or furniture have a strong influence on the
air circulation and thus the movement of smoke. They create an
area of "quiet" air. Rising smoke only reaches the smoke alarm
very late or not at all!
