- Add distilled water to each cell until the battery acid reaches the level specified by
the manufacturer on the battery. This helps release excess gas from the cells. Do
not overfill.
For a battery without cell seals, carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions when
charging.
- Carefully study all the battery manufacturer's special precautions, such as
removing or not removing cell caps when charging and observe the recommended
charging current.
- Determine the battery voltage from the vehicle operating instructions and make
sure that it matches the battery charger specifications.
- Place the charger as far away from the battery as the DC charging cables allow.
BATTERY CONNECTION
- Before connecting and disconnecting the charging clips, the charger must be
switched off or the mains plug must be pulled out of the socket.
Do not let the charging clamps touch each other.
CAUTION: A spark near the battery can cause a battery explosion:
Sparking near the battery is avoided by observing the following points:
Connection of the charger to a battery mounted in the vehicle:
- Lay AC and DC cables in such a way that there is no risk of damage from the
bonnet, door or moving engine parts.
- Check the polarity of the battery terminals. The POSITIVE (POS, P, +) battery pole
has
usually have a larger diameter than the NEGATIVE (NEG, N,-).
- Determine which pole is earthed (connected to the chassis). Normally the negative
pole is earthed.
- Charging a battery earthed to the negative terminal: Connect the red cable to the
positive terminal of the battery and the black cable to the chassis of the vehicle.
Please ensure that the black cable is not connected near the battery, carburettor,
fuel lines or other sheet metal parts.
- Charging a battery earthed to the positive terminal: Connect the black cable to the
negative terminal of the battery and the red cable to the chassis of the vehicle.
Please ensure that the red cable is not connected near the battery, carburettor, fuel
lines or other sheet metal parts.
- Before disconnecting the charging clips from the battery terminals, switch off the
charger and remove the mains cable.
Connecting the charger to a battery not mounted in the vehicle:
