S
CANNING
To take advantage of the ergonomic and productivity
benefits of the Magellan SL™ scanner, you'll need to
shed your old scanning habits and learn a new, easier
method. The key to effective scanning is in knowing
what ways the scanner is designed to help you. Un-
like older one-plane or single line scanners, the
Magellan SL scanner surrounds items with scan lines,
virtually eliminating the need for you to orient items
with regard to the scanner. Since the scanner can
read the right, left, front and back sides as well as the
bottom of a product, the only time you'll need to
orient an item is when it is marked on the top; in this
case, you simply tilt it slightly toward the vertical scan
window.

slide or push items through the scan zone "sweet
spot" shown at left. You can even move the items in
either direction (right-to-left or left-to-right), in the
event of the occasional rescan. Make sure that you
don't favor either the vertical or horizontal scan
window; rather leave items in their natural orientation
as much as possible. Since you'll be sliding items
rather than picking them up, you'll avoid lifting
thousands of pounds per day. And by not twisting or
rotating your wrist, or using your fingers and hands to
constantly grip items, you'll avoid the kind of motion
that can lead to repetitive motion injuries.
Since there's no longer a need to locate and orient
barcode labels, you'll be free to focus your attention
and eye contact on your customers instead of the
checkstand.

pletely on the platter and doesn't overlap onto the
counter or non-weighing surfaces of the scanner/
scale.
Next, follow the POS system instructions for entering
data. Generally, this involves pressing the POS weight
key, entering the PLU (Price Look-Up) number, and
pressing ENTER.
