Safeguards and Warnings
nVent RAYCHEM Elexant Systems must be installed correctly to ensure
safe and proper operation.
Follow the guidelines included in this document to minimize the risk of
electrical shock or fire and to comply with nVent's requirements as well
as agency and national electrical codes.
1. DESCRIPTION
nVent RAYCHEM Elexant 650c-Modbus (PCN 1244-022835) is an
electronic controller with colour touch display, advanced alarms and
the capability of switching 1 (standard operation) or 2 (2
optional) independent heating zones via external contactors.
The unit is to be mounted in DIN-rail panels for surface snow melting,
roof and gutter de-icing applications of nVent RAYCHEM heating cables.
Heating cables can be controlled (switched ON/OFF) via suitably rated
contactors.
The Elexant 650c-Modbus allows Modbus connectivity for remote
monitoring, configuration, and integration in a Building Management
System (BMS).
2. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Installation and all wiring must be in accordance with applicable
regulations. The device must be installed in non-hazardous areas only.
Electrical connections are to be made by qualified electricians.
Attention: mistakes made when connecting the control unit can cause
damage to the control unit and the sensors nVent is not liable for any
damage caused by faulty connection and/or incorrect handling.
Before working on the device, switch off the power supply.
The device may only be connected and serviced by authorised,
trained personnel.
The device is designed to be connected to fixed cables only.
When installing the device, make sure that high-voltage cables, such
as power supply cables, heating cables and cold leads do not come
into contact with low-voltage cables such as sensor cables.
Local standards for electrical installation must be observed.
If the device does not work, please first check all connections and the
main power supply.
2.1 Mounting of the enclosure
This control unit must be installed in an electrical panel and snapped
onto a DIN rail (DIN EN 50022-35). nVent provides a wide range of panels
as standard or tailor-made products.
2.2 Sensor installation
Surface snow melting sensor E650C-G - general guidelines
When choosing the sensor's installation location, unfavourable
circumstances such as aisles, shady areas, warm air outlets in
underground parking lots etc. need to be avoided. Ideally the combined
moisture and temperature sensor should be installed in a place where
the critical criteria "moisture and low temperature" causing the formation
of ice are most likely to occur first. Mount the sensor within the area to
be monitored and heated.
Arrange the sensor in such a way that the draining melt water runs onto
the sensor's measuring surface. This ensures that moisture is detected
as long as there is any. It is important that the sensor surface lies
horizontally and is level with the surrounding surface material.
