b) Always hold the rear handle of the
machine with the right hand and the front
handle with the left hand. Holding the pole
pruner with the hands reversed increases the
risk of personal injury and should never be
done.
c) Wear eye protection (visor or goggles),
hearing protection and a helmet to protect
against falling branches. Appropriate
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will
reduce personal injury from flying debris or
accidental contact with the saw chain.
d) Always maintain proper footing and
operate the pole pruner only while standing
on a stationary, secure, and level surface.
Slippery or unstable surfaces such as ladders
can cause loss of balance or control of the
machine.
e) When cutting a branch that is under
stress, be aware of the risk of springback.
When the tension in the wood fibers is
released, the springy branch can strike the
operator and/or throw the chain saw out of
control.
f) Use extreme caution when cutting brush
and young shrubs.
Thin materials can grab the saw chain and be
whipped at you, or cause you to lose your
balance from the pull.
g) Hold the pole pruner by the front handle
with the engine off and away from body
parts. When transporting or storing the
machine, always cover it with the chain
guard. Proper handling of the pole pruner will
reduce the likelihood of accidental contact with
the moving saw chain.
h) Follow instructions for chain tensioning
and changing lubrication accessories. A
chain that is incorrectly tensioned and
lubricated can either break or increase the risk
of kickback.
i) Keep handles dry, clean and free of oil
and grease. Greasy, oily grips are slippery
and cause loss of control.
j) Cut wood only. Do not use the pole
pruner for purposes not intended. For
example: do not use the pruner to cut plastic,
masonry or construction materials other than
wood. Using the pole pruner for operations
other than those intended may cause
dangerous situations.
k) National regulations may limit the use of
the pole pruner.
l) The pole pruner should not be used
where any part of it is likely to be within
10m of overhead power lines.
m) Do not allow anyone or animals to stand
under the pruner. Watch out for falling
branches.
7. Causes of kickback and prevention by
the operator when using the pole pruner
Kickback can occur when the nose or tip of the
guide bar touches an object or when the wood
constricts and pinches the saw chain in the
cutting section. Tip contact can in some cases
cause a sudden reverse reaction, causing the
guide bar to bounce up and back toward the
operator. Pinching the cutting chain on the
upper part of the guide bar can push the guide
bar violently towards the operator.
Either of these reactions can cause loss of
control of the saw which could result in serious
personal injury. As a pole pruner user, you
should take all measures to eliminate the risk
of accident or injury during your cutting work.
Kickback is the result of tool misuse and/or
incorrect operating procedures or conditions
and can be avoided by taking proper
precautions as specified below:
• Hold the machine firmly with both hands
and position your body and arms to resist
kickback forces. Kickback forces can be
controlled by the operator, if proper
precautions are taken. Do not let the pole
pruner go.
• Do not reach too far. This helps prevent
unintended end contact and allows better
control of the pole pruner in unforeseen
situations.
• Use only replacement bars and chains
specified by the manufacturer. Incorrect
replacement guides and chains can cause
chain breakage and/or kickback.
• Follow the manufacturer's instructions for
sharpening and maintaining the pole
pruner. A decrease in depth gauge level can
lead to an increase in bouncing.
