Alert
8.
Carefully remove the bulkheads above the deckline and sand the inside of the bulwarks smooth,
ready for planking using 1x5x600mm walnut strips. Glue the margin planks, nos. 25 and 26 into position
around the edge of the deck. Plank the deck with 1x8x600mm tanganjika strips, using plan 2 and pages 10
and 11, Abb 9,10 and 11 in the German instruction booklet.
The bow structure (no. 24), in which the bowsprit and anchor cables run through is made using two
wooden blocks (no. 24) 8x25x40.
Carve, file and sand them into their correct shape as on plan 3 no. 1. When shaped, glue the two halves
together and glue to its correct position at the front of the deck.
Using 2 x3 x 400mm walnut strip, cut and glue the bulwark frames (no. 28). Use Plan 2 for the spacing. The
gunwales (no. 29) can now be shaped and glued into position to the top of the top of the bulwarks using
2x7x600mm strip, which is very flexible. The curve at the front can be obtained easily by either steaming or
ironing the curve as shown at the top of page 5 in the German instruction booklet. Once fixed in place and
the glue has dried, mark out and drill the holes for the stanchions and rowlocks as shown on plan 2.
Using plan 1 carefully, mark out the position of the wales (no. 30) on both sides of the hull. This, again, is
very flexible strip (1.5x8x600mm), which will need to be tapered towards the stern and glued and pinned
into position.
Using 5x5x500mm walnut strips, cut and shape no. 31, the stern transom supports as shown on plan 3 no.
2, and glue the six supports into their correct position shown on plan 2. Carefully glue and pin the stern
transom (no. 32) into place. Give the whole hull a couple of coats of matt wood varnish. The basic hull
assembly should now be complete.
9.
Refer to plan 3, no. 3 for the correct detailing of the rudder assembly and pin it to the correct
position on the stern post. Drawing 4 on plan 3 details the correct assembly for the tiller which fits on top of
the rudder.
10.
Using plan 2, carefully mark out and drill, where necessary, where the various deck fittings go.
Using no.3 and part numbers found near the back of the German instruction booklet, construct the various
deck assemblies. All drawings for these are 1:1 scale. When the fittings have all been made, glue them
onto their respective positions on the deck as shown in the plans. Drill and glue the eyebolts into place
along with their associated blocks (It is advisable to open out the holes in the blocks before fixing them into
position as it can become awkward in later stages when access is restricted by masts, rigging etc.).
Rig the tackle for the carronade. Do not fit the stanchions until the rigging is complete as they can get in the
way of belaying the rigging.
11.
Referring to plan 4, make the various mast, yard and bowsprit assemblies along with their
associated blocks and eyebolts. The drawings give exact sizes, shapes and dimensions for the dowels.
Stain the mast with dye.
NOTE:
IF YOU ARE GOING TO RIG YOUR MODEL WITH SAILS, IT
IS ADVISABLE TO RIG THEIR RESPECTIVE YARDS AND MASTS, ALONG WITH ANY RUNNING
RIGGING BEFORE THE MASTS ARE STEPPED INTO THE DECK AND HULL.
Refer to the plans 1,2 and 6 and pages 16,17 and 18 in the German instruction booklet for the correct
rigging sequence and placing of sails.
12.
Once the yards are rigged to the masts, step the bowsprit and masts into the deck and keels and
using plans 5 and 1 rig the standing rigging (black hemp) to the masts.
Finish off by rigging the running rigging and tie them off to their various belaying points on the deck.
