At the O setting (where marked) it is not abnormal for
smaU steady concentrations to be observable on
sensitive analysers.
Analytical Techniques
For field checking of the state of calibration many
techniques and analysers are available. Ohmeda would not
recommend emy one technique or analyser in preference to
another but account must be taken of errors of use and
calibration of analysers and their reUabiUty must be
reaUsticaUy considered.
The foUowing method of check can be used where special
equipment is not available and where a secondary check on
analysers is desired. The characteristics of the vaporizer are
such that if the vaporizer is satisfactory at one dial setting
it should be satisfactory at aU other graduations.
1)
Check that the vaporizer is fuU and has been at
ambient temperature of 22°C for at least three hours.
2)
With the vap>orizer securely mounted open the drain
until no more Uquid wnU run out and close the drain.
3)
Check that the dial is turned 'off and carefuUy and
quickly refiU with a measured cimount of agent
without spUUng. (Use Eibout 70 ml). Close drain
securely.
4)
Leave vaporizer at nominaUy 22 °C for one hour to
ensure temp>erature has stabiUsed.
5)
Set flownrate to 5 Utre/min Oj.
6)
Tum dial to 2 %, note time and check that flowrate is
stiU 5 Utre/min - readjust as necessary.
7)
Leave vaporizer at this setting for 30 minutes
periodieaUy check and adjust the flowrate as
necessary. Turn vaporizer 'off and turn 'off Oj.
8)
Drain as in 2) and measure amount Uquid drained off.
The amount of Uquid consumed in ml. should be as
foUows;

Appropriate measures to handle exhaust gases and spillage
should be carried out.
It should be appreciated that the above cheek method is
designed to be quick and easy under ordinary hospital
conditions and that the method is somewhat imprecise.
Nevertheless, it would be unusual for measured Uquid
consumption to vary from that given above by more than
about 25%.
