4. Principle of Operation
Vaporizer Sunqi a n d Valve A s s o n U y
The duct system lies writhin the sump cover; above tlus the
rotary valve, the lower face of which tms ducts and a curved
vapour control channel machined into its surfaces.
The spindle of the rotary valve is keyed to the control dial.
In the 'OFF' position, the rotary valve meikes a direct link
between the 'inlet' and 'outlet' wnthin the vaporizer. When
the dial is tumed 'ON' the carrier gas is split into two
streams, designated bypass and vaporizing chamber flow
respectively.
The vaporizing chamber is lined by the two concentric wicks
which enclose a nickel-plated copper heUx so that the space
is converted into a long spiral outlet channel. The wicks,
dipping into the liquid, ensure that the vapour is maintained
at saturation concentration in the gas leaving the vaporizing
chamber.
The amount of agent picked up in the vaporizing stream will
vary due either to variation in room temperature or to the
cooling which takes place when the agent is vaporized. Each
causes changes in the effective vapour pressures of the
cmaesthetic agents. Unless some form of compensating device
was used, the output of the vaporizer for a given flow and
dial setting would change vjith temperature.
The Tec 3 Vaporizer has a temperature compensating device
(thermostat) which utilises a bi-metallic strip that deflects
according to its temperature to control the proportion of
carrier gas entering the vapxariziing chamber.
If the temperature of the vaporizer fedls, the thermostat closes
and more carrier gas is allowed into the vaporizing chamber.
If the temperature of the vaporizer increases, the thermostat
opens and less carrier gas is allowed into the vaporizing
chamber.
In this way the output of the vaporizer remains constant
under conditions of changing temperature.
