9-4 An intermediate high brings good weather
The intermediate high is so called because it is an area of rela-
tively good weather interposed between two low-pressure areas
in which the weather is bad. If the air pressure continues to climb
after the cold front has passed and left its typical 'V-kink' in the
curve, then the skies will soon clear and sunshine will take the
place of showers. As soon as the pressure rise flattens out,
howover, we can predict that the sunny weather will not last much
longer.
A few hours after the pressure has begun to drop, cirrus clouds
gather and a light breeze starts to blow, becoming stronger the
more the pressure falls. Intermediate highs rarely continue for
longer than 20 to 24 hours. They are typical of Northern and
Central European summers and occur between wet and windy
westerly weather situations. Here too, the rule is to find out the
mean value of the high-pressure curve in order to attempt a medi-
umterm forecast If the mean air-pressure value falls, we are in for
a prolonged period of bad weather; if it rises, the changeable sit-
uation is coming to an end.

Time scale (past 24 hours)
As long as the air pressure keeps rising, the direclion from which
the wind is blowing will veer clockwise (as seen on the compass)
and then die down. Later, when the pressure drops again, the
wind will pick up and the direclion from which it blows will veer
anti-clockwise (as seen on the face of the compass).
