1.1 The electronic baroscope
The Vetus baroscope is a precision instrument for measuring and
registering atmospheric pressure. Its 100 % electronic design
gives it capabilities far in excess of those of conventional meas-
uring techniques.
• Electronic tracing of pressure curves (i.e. no mechanical ele-
ments)
• Hysteresis-free pressure registration, achieved by electronic
sensory analysis. This means a very high degree of resolution
and accuracy.
• Electronic filters for attenuating non-plausible alterations in
pressure (water wave movements)
• Time base, time and calendar display with spot-on quartz
accuracy
• A visual and acoustic gale warning is given if pressure climbs
or drops by more than a critical preset value
• Battery operation
• Compact, lightweight, maintenance-free unit

1.2 Baroscope - area of use, advantages
The Baroscope is an instrument for forecasting local wind and
weather situations and is intended to complement the information
provided by the meteorological offices, as this often tends to be
limited to information on the general weather situation.
The absolute atmospheric pressure value alone is know to have
little influence upon wind and weather. What does have meteoro-
logical significance, however, is the extent of any alteration in
pressure on a unit-time basis. This is why baroscopes are superi-
or to straight-forward barometers, as with the latter, few people
make the effort to read off the pressure at regular intervals and
record it in a graph.
The Baroscope's automatic gale warning system means that the
development of incipient local winds can be detected much soon-
er (useful for e.g. yachts riding at anchor during the night, farm-
ers, mountain climbers etc.).
There are many and varied possible fields of use for this appli-
ance. on account both of its superlative technical characteristics
and of the design of the unit.
Alongside typical field of application onboard ships. at meteoro-
logical stations and in alpine mountaineering huts, the Baroscope
is equally at home in your living room or on your desk.
'Understanding wind and weather better with your baroscope'
contains useful tips on how to interpret the pressure curves
traced by the unit.
