9-1 A fair-weather situation, with high pressure, is com-
ing to an end
The longer a fair-weather situation has gone on, the slower and
more imperceptibly it will change - which is why the impending
break in the weather con very easily be overlooked, even by
meteorological offices! The baroscope shows the trend clearly,
however, long before the clouds and the weather provide the first
clues.
A slow but continual drop in pressure is a clear pointer to an
impending deterioration in the weather. The period of fine weath-
er is set to be followed by several days of bad weather.
The pressure drops slowly but persistently; after one or two days,
cirrus clouds start to gather, and the wind gradually freshens and
veers to westerly; it gets distinctly cooler, and the high-level
clouds are joined by low-level stratus and stratocumulus clouds
so that the sky is completely overcast. Rain and fresh breezes will
ensue, bringing several days of westerly weather. In other words,
the weather is going to be unsettled, with rain, wind and cloudy
skies alternating with sunny spells.
