9-3 A westerly weather situation is coming to an end,
fair weather is on the way
At first glance, it seems that all we have here is a typical westerly
weather situation. If we look more closely, though, we see that a
linear, upward movement has superimposed itself over the ups
and downs of the air pressure, and that the mean pressure value
has actually been steadily rising. At the same time, it can be seen
that the amplitude of the 'peaks and troughs' is becoming small-
er and smaller, and that the weather fronts are showing up less
and less distinctly on the curve.
Once these undulations have flattened out completely, and given
way to a gentle but sustained increase in pressure, then the west-
erly weather has come to an end. When the baroscope shows this
phase, the wind drops, the rainy weather is over, and sunshine
prevails. The slower and the longer the pressure rises, the longer
the weather will stay fine.
