matches the colour under the blank sample as closely as possible.
6. Read the phosphate content in the notch of the comparator block.
The additional graduation of colours from green to red on the colour chart allows the measure-
ment to be read quickly.
In the event that the colour of your test sample is darker than the colours of the chart, dilute the
sample with distilled or phosphate-free water and measure again.
Depending on the dilution, the actual phosphate level can be calculated by multiplying the result
as follows:
5 ml Probe + 5ml dist. water: result x 2
2 ml Probe + 8 ml dist. water: result x 5
1 ml Probe + 9 ml dist. water: result x 10
The instructions are repeated in a series of simple diagrams on the reverse of the colour chart.

Iron (Fe):
Special features:
The JBL Iron Test Set Fe is designed for the measurement and routine control of the iron
content in freshwater and marine aquariums and garden ponds within the range 0.05-1.5 mg/
litre (ppm). Using the compensation method developed specially by JBL, precise and reliable
results can be obtained even in moderately discoloured aquarium water, e.g. caused by peat
filters and disease treatment.
Why test?
Besides an adequate supply of CO 2 , aquatic vegetation needs iron and trace elements. Since
healthy aquatic plants constantly consume iron and other trace elements, which only keep in
the water for a limited period even when bonded to so-called chelating agents (usually found
in modern fertilizers, e.g. in JBL Ferropol), the iron content must be monitored regularly with
the JBL Iron Test Set Fe and replenish, if necessary. A concentration of 0.1-0.2 mg/litre (ppm)
is normally adequate for good plant growth. A standard dose of JBL Ferropol corresponds to
about 0.2 mg/litre (ppm). The JBL Iron Test Set Fe can also be used to measure the iron content
in tap water (normally iron-free) or in natural waters as well as in garden ponds. Levels between
0.002 and 0.05 mg/l are recommended in marine aquariums.
Remedy:
Iron content too low: fertilize with JBL Ferropol and Ferropol 24
Iron content too high: change part of the water or filter with JBL Carbomec activ.
