diameter of 134 mm and a height of
100 mm.
When glueing specimens for thin
sec tions the specimen is pressed
against the slide with a pressing rod
which is led through the ball bear-
ing. In this way an effi cient glueing
with an even, thin layer of glue is
ob tained.
In order to facilitate the cleaning, the
bottom of the embedding cham ber
is made of polypro pylene so that
wast ed im preg na tion liquid does
not stick. The tube for supply of im-
preg na tion liquid is used only once,
which makes the cleaning easier.
The vacuum is read on a va cuum
gauge and it is reg u lat ed with a
valve. Epovac comes in two mod els,
one with built-in air ejec tor pump
used in con ne ction with com pressed
air and one with out. The latter can
be used with most vacuum pumps.
Effi cient impregnation
An effi cient impregnation de pends
on several conditions:
1. Open pores
2. Vacuum
The specimen is evac u at ed at as low
a pressure as pos si ble. Then - dur-
ing the im preg na tion itself - the pres-
sure is increased a little.

3. The viscosity of the
im preg na tion liquid
The best impregnation is ob-
tained with the thinnest liquid. With
e.g. Epofi x the lowest vis cos i ty is
ob tained - without si mul ta ne ous
ac cel er at ing of the hard en ing - at
30°C. The specimen should have
the same tem per a ture. The best
re sult is ob tained if the im preg na tion
liquid has pen e trat ed com plete ly, be-
fore the vis cos i ty of the liquid starts
to in crease be cause of the po lym -
er i za tion.
4. A clean specimen
Grinding dust in pores and scratch es
prevents the im preg na tion liquid
from penetrating com plete ly. The
spec i men is best cleaned in an ul tra -
son ic clean er. Af ter wards, it is rinsed
with Eth a nol in order to make the
im preg na tion agent ad here better to
the sur face.
5. The size of the specimen
The small er the specimen, the short-
er the time under vacuum.
6. Temperature
Epofi x does not shrink when hard-
en ing at room temperature. At high er
tem per a tures - e.g. at 60°C - the
shrinkage is still less than 2%. For
use when glueing on spec i mens for
making thin sec tions, slides and cov-
er glas ses are avail a ble. The slides
have ground edges and are, there-
fore, pleasant to work with.
