BLOOD PRESSURE INFORMATION
The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) defined different levels of blood pressure
based on clinical trials and meta-analyses. The prerequisite of Blood Pressure measure-
m
ment is that it must be undertaken using an accurate device that has been clinically
validated. The blood pressure measurement and its monitoring can be performed at
s.
patient home; however, the hypertension diagnoses will be established by the doctor
at his/her office. According to the environment where the measurement is made, the
thresholds test values for elevated pressure or hypertension may vary. The ESC pro-
posed table below summarizes those thresholds at the doctor office or at home.

hypertension. Eur. Heart Journal.
BP, blood pressure; DBP, diastolic blood pressure; SBP, systolic blood pressure.
Note: Do not be alarmed if an abnormal reading occurs.
A better indication of an individual's blood pressure occurs after 2-3 readings
taken at the same time each day over an extended period of time. Consult your
doctor if test results remain abnormal.
Non-elevated blood
pressure
Office BP
SBP < 120 mmHg
and
DBP < 70 mmHg
Home BP
SBP <120 mmHg
and
DBP < 70 mmHg

Elevated blood
pressure
Office BP
SBP 120 - 139 mmHg
or
DBP 70 - 89 mmHg
Home BP
SBP 120 - 134 mmHg
or
DBP 70 - 84 mmHg

pharmacological treatment.
Hypertension
Office BP
SBP ≥ 140 mmHg
or
DBP ≥ 90 mmHg
Home BP
SBP ≥ 135 mmHg
or
DBP ≥ 85 mmHg
Cardiovascular risk is
sufficiently high to merit BP
pharmacological treatment
initiation.
