11. Working instructions
m Before starting work, note the following:
• Workplace tidy?
• Is the chain sharpener firmly mounted on a work-
bench?
• You may not put the device into operation before
this operating manual is read, have observed all the
specified notes and the device is fitted as described!
Working with the chain sharpener
m Always keep your hands at a safe distance from the
rotating grinding disc.
• Do not use damaged grinding discs or those that
have changed shape.
• Do not work until the grinding disc has reached
maximum speed.
• Only saw chains that can be safely placed and guid-
ed may be processed.
Sharpening of saw chains
Before any setting on the device:
• Shutting down the device
• Wait until the grinding disc is at a standstill
• Pull out the mains plug
Grinding all cutting links (Fig. 5 - 7)
To grind a cutting edge of the cutting links, proceed
as follows:
1.
Set the sharpening angle: By loosening the lock-
ing nut (9), turn the chain tensioning unit (11) to
the required sharpening angle on the scale (8) and
tighten the locking nut (9) again (Fig. 5).
m The cutting edges of the cutting links are normally
ground at an angle of between 30 and 35 degrees.
For exact details, contact your saw chain manu-
facturer.
2.
Release the tightening lever (7) and place the saw
chain in the chain guide bar (6). The cutting edges
must face the grinding disc (4) (Fig. 6).
3.
Fold down the chain stop (13) and pull the saw
chain back until the cutting link to be sharpened
rests against the chain stop (13) (Fig. 6).
4.
For exact alignment, pull the grinding head (16)
against the cutting link. Adjust the distance by
means of the adjusting screw for chain stop (12)
so that the grinding disc (4) touches the cutting
link. In addition, regulate the grinding depth with
the adjusting screw for chain stop (12). (Fig. 6)
5.
Tighten the tightening lever (7) → saw chain is
fixed (Fig. 6).
6.
Adjust
stop adjusting screw (5) so that the grind-
ing disc (4) touches the tooth base (Fig. 7).
m Attention!
Do not set the depth stop too low, otherwise
there is a danger of the chain breaking during
operation.
7.
Switch on the device and carefully sand the cut-
ting edge of the cutting link by moving the handle
(1) on the grinding head (2) downwards.
8.
To transport the chain onwards, switch the de-
vice off. Release the tightening lever (7) and fix
the next chain link in the chain guide bar (6) us-
ing the adjusted chain stop (13) and the tighten-
ing lever (7).
m Attention!
First sharpen the teeth on one side of the
chain. Then adjust the sharpening angle and
sharpen the teeth on the other side.
m Attention!
Mark the first cutting link, e.g. with a chalk
line. This way you avoid sharpening cutting
links twice.
Setting the depth gauge distance
If all the cutting links' cutting edges are sharpened,
your saw chain is sharp, but it may not cut.
Therefore, there must always be a depth gauge dis-
tance (= distance between depth gauge and cutting
edge). As a rule, it is 0.5 – 0.8 mm. For exact details,
contact your saw chain manufacturer.
m Too great a depth gauge distance increases the risk
of kick-back when sawing.
m If the depth gauge distance is too small, you may
have to file off the distance with a file according to
the specifications of your saw chain.
m Make sure you round off the front edge of the depth
gauge with a file. The original shape of the cutting
link must be preserved.
