COMPASS FUNCTIONS
The compass functions (C-Adj.)
The "C- Adj" menu contains all the settings related to operation of the autopilot in COMPASS mode.
These settings can only be made when the compass probe is connected to the electronic controller.
Setting the compass damping (Damp)
The damping setting influences the steering behaviour in pilot operation. With high damping, brief major course
alterations are averaged out and undesirable "nervous" steering behaviour is thus avoided. With low damping,
changes in the course are corrected directly by corresponding reactions from the autopilot. The damping can
be set between 0 (low) and 10 (high). Select a damping factor which corresponds to the prevailing sea
conditions. To achieve good closed loop control characteristics, set the damping as low as possible.
Set the damping factor as follows:
Example:
Aligning the compass probe
On completion of deviation compensation – "AutoDev" – a check must be performed to determine whether
the compass probe is exactly aligned with the midship line after installation.
Take several true bearings, e.g. of landmarks or fixed sea-marks, to determine the deviation in degrees
("A" error). Use marks which are as far away as possible. The greater the distance, the more precisely the
deviation can be determined.
Major deviations of more than approx. 4° can be compensated for by turning the compass probe.
