  • Seite 29 Schedule of the settings......... . . Testing of the VDO LOGIC Pilot system ......
  • Seite 30 Thank you for choosing VDO. We are sure that this system will enhance your comfort and safety at sea. In order to ensure easy and safe operation of your VDO LOGIC PILOT, you should familiarise yourself with all the functions of the system.
  • Seite 31 Repairs to the components of the autopilot system may only be performed by specialists authorised by VDO Kienzle. The VDO Logic autopilot system conforms to the relevant safety regulations. Removal of covers may expose live parts. Connection points may also be live. The machine must be disconnected from all power sources prior to any maintenance, repair or replacement of parts which requires the casing to be opened.
  • Seite 32 VDO LOGIC PILOT The VDO Logic Pilot display unit The VDO LOGIC PILOT is a modern autopilot system which is intended for use in recreational sailing. When in operation, the analogue display shows the course deviation (OFF COURSE) in pilot mode and the rudder position (RUDDER) in standby mode.
  • Seite 33 VDO LOGIC PILOT The PROG key: This key is used to select the basic settings, so as to adjust the autopilot for your vessel. The MODE key: This key is used to select the various steering modes (COMPASS, WIND, NAV).
  • Seite 34 VDO LOGIC PILOT The PILOT / STANDBY key When the power supply is switched on, the display shows "wait” for approx. 2 seconds. The autopilot is in standby mode and the pointer indicates the rudder position on the lower scale of the dial.
  • Seite 35 VDO LOGIC PILOT The MODE key The MODE key can be used when the system is on standby to call up and select all the operating modes on the display. The modes are called up by repeated pressing of the MODE key. Press the ENTER key to select the mode displayed.
  • Seite 36 SETTINGS The ARROW keys When the system is set to pilot operation, it uses the following courses as the course to be steered: In COMPASS mode, the compass course applied. In WIND mode, the current apparent angle of incidence of the wind. In NAV mode, the course between two marks.
  • Seite 37 SETTINGS Settings for the closed loop control characteristics in pilot operation In pilot operation, the following parameters can be set by pressing the PROG key: Rud ? Setting the rudder factor (p.39) Resp ? Setting the rudder response band (p.39) Exit ? Exit from the programming menu Settings for the closed loop control characteristics in standby operation...
  • Seite 38 SETTINGS Setting the rudder factor (Rud) The rudder factor can be set both in standby and in pilot operation. The optimum setting for this factor is dependent on the type of vessel and the speed at which it sails. Proceed as follows to set the rudder factor: Example: The rudder factor can be set in a range of 0 to 20.
  • Seite 39 SETTINGS If the rudder reacts too nervously, the Resp factor set is too small. If the vessel wanders around the specified course too much, the Resp factor set is too large. It is useful to increase this factor in heavy seas, and to reduce it in calm waters. The Resp factor can be set from 0 to 20.
  • Seite 40 BASIC SETTINGS The basic settings for the autopilot (AP-Adj.) The ”AP- Adj” menu contains all the settings which it may be necessary to change at a later date. These settings cannot be changed while the autopilot is actively steering (pilot operation). Setting the rudder deadband (Rud-D) This parameter is used to set the rudder deadband.
  • Seite 41 BASIC SETTINGS Setting the trimming rate (Trim) This parameter is used to set the strength of the autopilot’s reaction to disruptions which constantly push the vessel to one side. The higher the trimming rate set (0 to 20), the more sensitively the autopilot reacts to and counteracts course deviations caused, for example, by wind, waves or the difference in speed between twin engines.
  • Seite 42 COMPASS FUNCTIONS The compass functions (C-Adj.) The ”C- Adj” menu contains all the settings related to operation of the autopilot in COMPASS mode. These settings can only be made when the compass probe is connected to the electronic controller. Setting the compass damping (Damp) The damping setting influences the steering behaviour in pilot operation.
  • Seite 43 It is necessary to compensate for the effects of this influence. Whereas with conventional fluid compasses an authorised specialist has to be called in to perform this work, the VDO LOGIC PILOT with its automatic deviation compensation allows you to do it simply and reliably yourself.
  • Seite 44 COMPASS FUNCTIONS / SAVING THE SETTINGS Automatic compensation can be aborted by pressing the ENTER key. The display then shows "Cleared”. If certain events (e.g. another vessel crossing your course) prevent the deviation compensation from being completed, you can interrupt it at any time by pressing the ENTER key. Pressing the ENTER key again switches the display unit to standby operation.
  • Seite 45 MAINTENANCE / INSTALLATION Maintenance of the VDO LOGIC Autopilot The display unit is maintenance-free. Use a moist, non-fraying or antistatic cloth to clean the display unit. Do not use cleaning agents. Installation of the VDO LOGIC Autopilot display unit Before you start installation, please read the notes on safety on page 4 and the installation instructions for all the corresponding system components.
  • Seite 46 INSTALLATION Lay the cable to the Pilot Box. If necessary, the white terminal strip can be removed for better routing. Ensure that the wiring is reconnected in the correct colour sequence. Wiring errors can cause irreparable damage to the equipment which is not covered by the warranty. The white terminal strip of the control unit is to be plugged into connector PL14 in the PILOT BOX.
  • Seite 47 SETTINGS The basic autopilot settings after installation The ”Setup” menu contains all the settings which are required during installation of the autopilot system. These settings are made in the recommended manner (see p. 41) by the person installing the system on completion of the installation work, and cannot be changed while the autopilot is actively steering (pilot operation).
  • Seite 48 SETTINGS Setting the rudder centre (Rud-C) This parameter is used to set the rudder position in which the vessel adopts a straight course. Make the setting as follows: Move the rudder into the central position manually. Pressing the ”ENTER” key sets the rudder centre. On the display unit, the pointer in the lower part of the scale (RUDDER) moves to the zero position.
  • Seite 49 SETTINGS Schedule of the settings When you have installed and completed setting of your autopilot, please enter all the settings here. This will assist you in restoring the settings if they are inadvertently deleted or altered, and can be useful for troubleshooting if you need a service or have any questions.
  • Seite 50 TESTING OF THE VDO LOGIC PILOT Testing of the VDO LOGIC Pilot system General tests: Check whether all the components have been installed in accordance with the relevant instructions. Check all system connections before you switch the power for the system on.
  • Seite 51 TESTING OF THE VDO LOGIC PILOT Test run: Test runs must not be performed in constricted channels or waters with heavy traffic. Test runs should preferably be performed in average sea conditions. Fine adjustment of the individual functions during the test run should best be performed in the following...
  • Seite 52 TROUBLESHOOTING Troubleshooting The VDO Logic Pilot is equipped with a self-diagnosis system. This facility allows errors, caused for instance by incorrect installation, to be found rapidly. The self-tests are performed automatically each time the power supply is switched on. If faults are found, for example due to a missing cable connection, a corresponding error message is shown on the LC display.
  • Seite 53 TROUBLESHOOTING / TECHNICAL DATA Error code: Meaning / Action: Pilot control unit error The Pilot Box is not receiving any data from the control unit. Check the cable connection. See error code 036 Fault on rudder position sensor The rudder position sensor is not transmitting a correct signal to the Pilot Box. Check the cable connection and ensure that the arm on the sensor does not have too much play and its motions can follow the rudder system.
