Notes on safety
Please follow all the instructions presented in this manual precisely.
Pay special attention to all passages marked with this symbol. These are notes which are
particularly important for the operation of the system and for your safety.
Use of the autopilot does not relieve you of responsibility for your vessel, and requires good seamanship.
Monitor the operations of your vessel even when the autopilot is activated, and follow the dictates of your
experience at sea.
Safety notes on operation:
The autopilot system must not be operated without supervision.
If it is to be assumed that safe operation is no longer possible, the autopilot is to be shut down and secured
to prevent inadvertent operation.
It is to be assumed that safe operation is no longer possible when:
- there is visible damage to the autopilot system,
- the autopilot system no longer functions,
- error messages are displayed, but the cause of the fault cannot be remedied.
Activation and deactivation of the autopilot are the responsibility of the helmsman, and may only be performed
by that person.
Do not reach through the spokes of the wheel, for instance to operate the throttle lever, when the autopilot
is in operation.
Do not stand within the swing of the tiller. If possible, fold the tiller up when the autopilot is working.
Do not use the autopilot in constricted waterways, in areas with heavy shipping or in the vicinity of power
cables.
Safety notes on maintenance:
Repairs to the components of the autopilot system may only be performed by specialists authorised by VDO
Kienzle. The VDO Logic autopilot system conforms to the relevant safety regulations.
Removal of covers may expose live parts. Connection points may also be live. The machine must be
disconnected from all power sources prior to any maintenance, repair or replacement of parts which requires
the casing to be opened.
If maintenance or repair work on a live and open machine is unavoidable, it may only be performed by a
specialist who is familiar with the associated risks and the relevant regulations.
Caution: Capacitors in the unit may still be charged, even if the machine has been disconnected from all
power sources.
Ensure that only fuses of the specified type and the specified current rating are used. Use of provisionally
repaired fuses or bridging of the fuse holder are impermissible.
When replacing the fuses in the computer module, always disconnect the computer module from the on-board
power supply. When you have done that, remove the defective fuse and replace it with a fuse of the same
type. Only restart the autopilot system when the computer module is firmly closed and screwed tight.
Use a moist, non-fraying or anti-static cloth to clean the display unit. Do not use cleaning agents.
