Infrared measurements
Infrared thermometers measure the surface temperature of an
object. The unit's optics detect emitted, reflected and transmitted
energy, which is collected and focused onto a detector. The
device's electronics convert the information into a temperature
value that is displayed on the device. In devices with lasers, the
laser is only used for aiming.

Field of view
Make sure the target is larger than the unit's spot size. The smaller
the target, the closer you should approach it. If accuracy is
important, the target should be at least twice the size of the unit
spot.

Distance & Spot Size
As the distance (D) from the object increases, the range (S)
measured by the unit becomes larger. See figure under point 4.

Finding a Hot Spot
To find a hot spot, aim the thermometer outside the desired area
and then scan with an up and down motion until you find the hot
spot.
