resulting from the use of this equipment.
It is essential that you understand the proper use of this equipment before attempting
to use it in any way. The Ozone Bullet and other gliders designed for Speed Flying use
must only be launched and landed with skis in suitable ski terrain.
The User MUST:
Be an experienced skier with competent knowledge of backcountry skiing and terrain,
and be equipped with appropriate safety and rescue equipment when traveling in the
backcountry.
Be an experienced and licensed paraglider pilot.
Be in an area approved for Speed Flying.
Use helmet and proper protective equipment.
Use the Bullet in a safe and hazard free environment.
Maintain the equipment properly and inspect it regularly.
Receive Speed Flying Instruction prior to using the Bullet.
Ensure that all harness connections are fastened properly.
Practice speed flying with a partner. Be aware of the other people you are traveling
with in the backcountry at all times. Use the buddy system.
NEVER use your Bullet in a populated area or an area not approved for Speed Flying.
NEVER use your Bullet in a ski area or on a ski slope / ski piste.
NEVER use your Bullet around hazardous obstacles such as ski lifts or trees or rocks.
NEVER use your Bullet unless you have adequate safety and rescue equipment for
winter backcountry travel such as avalanche transciever, shovel, probe, and other
avalanche safety equipment.
NEVER use equipment if there is any damage to harness, risers, webbing, lines, cloth
or stitching.
YOUR OZONE BULLET
The Ozone Bullet has been created specifically for the purpose of Speed Flying,
which means that it should only be launched and landed on snow with skis. The
Bullet has been tested thoroughly and is a very stable, although fast, glider.
You will find that although the Bullet launches quickly and its trim speed is
faster than any normal paraglider, it is also very stable in the air. The handling
is progressive and the turns are smooth, although fast.
Rob Whittall and the Ozone Test Team have designed the Bullet to launch
easily, fly in a stable configuration, and have very high passive safety. We hope
you agree that the Bullet is as fast and fun as it is easy to use, but we urge you
to use great caution and to progress slowly in this new sport.
Our Philosophy at Ozone Paragliders is to produce safe and fun handling wings
that deliver top performance. Speed-flying is a relatively new sport. For this reason,
we have striven to make the Bullet as accessible and enjoyable as possible for the
new pilots who will be enjoying it this year an in the years to come. During the course
of our testing, we realized that some other wings on the market for speed-flying fell
short of what we considered to be acceptable in terms of ease of use and comfort.
Because these wings are so small and so dynamic, some beginners found it difficult to
be confident with the high speed and dynamic handling that is inherent in the nature
of these wings. As a result of this, we have designed the Bullet to be safe and easy
to use in all respects. We are not at all interested in pushing the limits of performance
and speed in this sport, as we see this leading in the wrong direction and potentially to
the failure of the sport.
Testing and Development
The Bullet has evolved from a series of prototypes designed by Rob Whittall, whose
philosophy centers on pilot safety and ease of use. Our main concern with this sport is
safety, and we feel that the only way forward is to focus on safe and usable designs.
We experimented with 2 and 3 line riser designs, a variety of profiles, varying amounts
of sail tension and number of cells. Ultimately, we strove for a simple safe design, and
we believe that we have achieved this in the final version of the Bullet. Testing was
conducted by Rob Whittall and Matt Gerdes and other factory pilots at a wide variety
of conditions from high wind soaring to tail wind launches at 13,000 feet. We have
repeatedly foot launched and landed all sizes of the Bullet in no wind and tail wind
conditions with success each time, and flown it in highly turbulent rotor conditions
(we do not under any circumstances recommend foot launching or landing the Bullet
or flying it in turbulent conditions!). All of our testing has confirmed that the Bullet is
a wing suitable for anyone wanting to experience the exhilaration and fun of speed-
flying.
Caring for your Bullet
Your Bullet is a very durable wing and should last for more than 200 flying hours if
properly cared for. Treat your Bullet with care: do not ground-handle it excessively,
keep it out of direct sunlight as much as possible, keep it as dry as possible, and never
pack it if it is dirty or wet.
