Industrial RFID System – Read/Write Head

Data carrier
The BIS M identification system is a contactless read and
write system. The read/write head consists of an electronic
analysis system with integrated antenna. The system can
be used to write information to a data carrier and to read it.
The data and current status messages are transmitted
from the identification system to the controlling system via
a defined protocol. Via this protocol, it is also possible to
transmit additional commands to the device, such as
switching off the read/write head antenna.
Data transmission to the controlling system is performed
with an IO-Link master.
The data carrier is an independent unit that is supplied with
power by the read/write head. The read/write head
permanently transmits a carrier signal that is picked up by
the data carrier from a certain distance. As soon as the
data carrier is supplied with energy by the carrier signal, a
static read operation takes place.
The read/write head manages the data transfer with the
data carrier and serves as a buffer.
The data is transmitted to the IO-Link master, which
forwards it to the controlling system (a control computer,
e.g. industrial PC or PLC).

Installation

CAUTION
High-frequency electromagnetic waves
The antenna of the read/write head emits high-frequency
electromagnetic waves. Additional measures must be
taken to prevent health hazards.
► Determine the mounting position of the antenna in
such a way that a safety distance of at least 20 cm
between the antenna and workplaces of persons is
ensured.
► Make sure that people do not stay in the vicinity of
the antenna for an extended period of time.
► Use suitable measures to shield areas that are
explicitly not to be covered.
The devices must be permanently installed.
1. Select a suitable installation position.
2. Fasten read/write head with 2 M4 screws (strength
class 8.8, tightening torque ≤ 1 Nm).

be output (see configuration guide for Pin Assignment function).
► Connect the data line to the IO-Link master (for
connection cables and accessories, see
www.balluff.com on the product page).
Shielding and cable routing
Shielded cables must be used to connect the devices. The
cable must be routed tension-free.
Cable length
For IO-Link operation, the maximum cable length is 20 m.
