Glossary
Electrolyte: A current-conducting (usually liquid) medium within
the battery cells, that enables the movement of ions between
electrodes. There are also so-called fixed electrolytes which are
either gels or are embedded in glass fibre (AGM = Absorbent Glass
Mat).
Retention voltage: This method keeps the battery fully charged,
so that it is always ready for use (e.g. for emergency power).
Gassing voltage: The gassing voltage is the voltage at which the
acid in the battery breaks down into hydrogen and oxygen during
charging. The electrolyte starts to bubble and dangerous explosive
oxyhydrogen gas is released. The gassing voltage depends on the
mixing ratio of the sulphuric acid and the cell temperature.
Gel battery: see "Maintenance-free battery"
IU characteristic: Semi-automatic charging, suitable for lead
batteries. Charging starts with a constant current (I) until the battery
is approximately 80% charged. Then recharging with a constant
voltage (U) starts up until the capacity is 100%.
However, it does not automatically switch to the lower retention
voltage. Charging must therefore be finished when the charge
current is only 1% to 2% of the rated capacity.
IU0U characteristic: Automatic charging, a precondition for gel
and mat batteries. Charging starts with a constant current (I) until
the battery is approximately 80% charged. Then recharging with a
constant voltage (U) starts up until the capacity is 100%. After that,
it automatically switches to the lower retention voltage, which
means the battery can remain connected for a long time.
Wet battery: A battery where the acid is in a fluid condition.
