Glossary

This glossary explains a few terms which are used in this manual.
AGM: Absorber Glass Mat refers to batteries where the electrolyte
is bound in a fibreglass fleece. This means the battery can be
installed in any position (even upside-down) without battery acid
leaking. Even if there is a leak, no battery acid escapes. These
batteries are therefore particularly suitable for boats.
Rechargeable battery: A rechargeable battery stores electrical
energy. When a rechargeable battery is charged, electrical energy
is converted to chemical energy. If a consumer is connected, the
chemical energy is converted back to electrical energy.
When batteries are charged and discharged, heat is generated,
which means some of the charged energy is lost. The ratio of
useable energy to the energy expended for charging is called the
charge efficiency.
Amp hours [Ah]: Unit for electrical charging.
It states how long the charge will provide a particular current:
t = Q / I
t: time in hours (h)
Q: charge (capacity) in amp hours (Ah)
I: discharge current in amps (A)
Battery: A battery is a unit consisting of one or more connected
galvanic cells which also have external electrical connections.
Distilled water: Water without the ions, trace elements or
impurities found in normal tap water. It is used as a solvent and for
cleaning in medicine, chemistry and biology.
Distilled water is made by distilling (evaporating and then
condensing) normal tap water or filtered water. It is largely free of
salts, organic substances and micro-organisms. However, it can
contain slight quantities of volatile compounds.
