5.6 Mixing signals

After the input signals have been matched and possibly processed
with regard to dynamics and sound and after the signal paths have
been assigned, the actual task of a mixer will start: mixing signals to
the outputs There is, of course, no fixed order of all operating steps
On the one hand, the sum channel L / R MIX OUTPUT is sometimes
already used during sound adjustment in order to monitor the channel
to be set via the amplifier system On the other hand, it is sometimes
necessary to adjust the settings of an input channel during the mixing
process

5.6.1 Sum signal L /R MIX OUTPUT

The faders of all channels are used to set the signal parts of a channel
(input channel or signal bus) at the sum signal L / R MIX OUTPUT The
faders are shown in the channel output views (fig 6 in chapter 521
and fig 12 in chapter 522) and also as white bar graphs at the
bottom of the channel strips
Requirements:
– The channels have been assigned to the stereo sum (
this is also indicated at the bottom of the corresponding channel
strip ("L&R")
1) Press the keys IN 1– 8, IN 9 – 20 or BUS 1– 8 (8) to select the channel
range The channel overview for this range will be indicated (fig 3
at the beginning of chapter 5 and fig 10 in chapter 522) The
control knobs (10) are now respectively assigned to the fader of a
channel from the range selected In addition, the LED ring around
the corresponding control knob will indicate the current fader
setting of these channels
2) Use the control knobs to adjust the volume ratio between the
channels
3) Press the keys IN 1– 8, IN 9 – 20 and BUS 1– 8 to switch to another
channel range for setting the other channels in this range if re-
quired
4) Use the control knob at the bottom on the right (13) to adjust the
master volume of the stereo sum The LED ring around the knob
will indicate the current setting
5) To change the stereo position of a mono channel or the stereo
balance of a stereo channel, tap the lowermost section of the cor-
responding channel strip The view for the channel output will be
indicated (figs 6, 8, 12) Use the control PAN or BAL to adjust the
right / left ratio To make it easier to reset the setting to the centre
position "50|50", tap the display field twice

5.6.2 Signals for stage monitors

Requirements:
– The mono bus provided for mixing the signals of the stage monitor
has been assigned to the analog output (19) to which the monitor
system (amplifier system, active monitor speaker, in-ear monitoring)
has been connected (
– The input channels of the signals desired in the monitor have been
assigned to the specific mono bus with the setting "Pre Fader" and
(
 chapter 522)
1) Use the key BUS 1– 8 (8) to call up the channel overview for the
signal buses For the time being, adjust an average volume for the
specific bus with the corresponding control knob (10) The white
bar graph at the bottom of the channel strip and also the LED ring
around the control knob will indicate the current fader setting
38
 chapter 524)
2) Press the control knob of the bus or tap the corresponding channel
strip to select the bus The LED underneath the control knob will
light up
3) Press the key SENDS (8); it will be illuminated The key IN 1– 8 (8)
will also be illuminated now
4) Use the control knobs (10) to adjust the signal parts of the inputs
1– 8 for the monitor Press the key IN 9 – 20 to go to the other input
channels and to adjust their signal parts if required
5) To adjust the overall volume for the monitor, press the key SENDS
again so that only the key Bus 1– 8 will be illuminated Use the
corresponding control knob to make the setting
6) To readjust the sound, tap the miniature frequency curve under-
neath "EQ" in the channel strip of the bus to call up the parametric
equalizer if required (
critical feedback frequencies, for example For this purpose, it is
also possible to insert a GEQ effect module into the bus (
ter 533)
7) An (additional) insert effect can be used for the bus if required
 chapter 52),
(
 chapter 571), e g some "feel-good reverberation" for the
singer

5.6.3 Signal for effect buses

To be able to use an effect for multiple channels, the signal parts of the
corresponding input channels are added to a bus When the internal
effects of the mixer are used, the effect modules will be inserted into
the bus To use external effect units, the bus signal will be sent to an
output, processed and returned to the mixer via an input
5.6.3.1 Internal effects
Requirements:
– An effect module has been assigned to the bus intended for the
effect (
accordingly (
– The specific bus has been assigned to the channel to which the
effect is to be added, e g the sum channel (
– The input channels to which an effect is to be added have been
assigned to the specific bus with the setting "Post Fader" (
ter 522)
1) Use the key BUS 1– 8 (8) to call up the channel overview for the
signal buses For the time being, adjust an average volume for the
specific bus with the corresponding control knob (10) The white
bar graph at the bottom of the channel strip and also the LED ring
around the control knob will indicate the current fader setting
2) Press the control knob of the bus or tap the corresponding channel
strip to select the bus The LED underneath the control knob will
light up
3) Press the key SENDS (8); it will be illuminated The key IN 1– 8 (8)
will also be illuminated now
4) Use the control knobs (10) to adjust the signal parts of the inputs
1– 8 for the effect Press the key IN 9 – 20 to go to the other input
channels and to adjust their signal parts if required
Note: The setting for picking up the signal is "Post Fader"; therefore, the
signal part adjusted also depends on the setting of the corresponding input
channel fader
5) To adjust the overall volume for the effect, press the key SENDS
again so that only the key Bus 1– 8 will be illuminated Use the
corresponding control knob to make the setting
