Coating thickness gauge SDM-115
Item-No. 10 08 47
Intended use
The measuring instrument measures and indicates the thickness of non-magnetic coatings such as lacquers,
colours, glass, porcelain, plastic, etc. on magnetic and non-magnetic metals on the display. The display can
be illuminated.
The detection of magnetic metals such as iron, sheets or steel, as well as non-magnetic metals such as
aluminium, brass etc. is done automatically. A manual presetting is possible.
Up to 255 measured values can be saved in the integrated data logger and read out on the measuring device.
Hi/Lo limit values can be programmed for a fast coating thickness control. When they are exceeded an alarm
signal is emitted.
A calibration function always ensures accurate measurements. The layer thickness can be displayed
optionally in micro metres (µm) or milli inches (mils).
The meter is operated by batteries and requires a 9 V block battery.
Measurements must not be carried out under unfavourable ambient conditions. Unfavourable ambient
conditions are:
- Wet conditions or high air humidity,
- Dust and flammable gases, vapours or solvent,
- strong electro-static and magnetic fields.
Any use other than described above is not permitted and can damage the product. No part of the product
must be changed or converted! The safety instructions are to be observed without fail!
Safety and hazard notes
An exclamation mark in a triangle indicates important instructions in the operating
instructions. Prior to starting up the product read the entire operating instructions, they
contain important information on the correct operation.
The warranty will be void in the event of damage caused by failure to observe these safety instructions! We
do not assume liability for consequential damage!
We do not assume any liability for material and personal damage caused by improper use or non-compliance
with the safety instructions! The warranty will be void in such cases.
Unauthorized conversion and/or modification of the product is inadmissible for reasons of safety and approval
(CE).
Please be careful to operate the device correctly. Therefore, please follow the operating instructions carefully.
In schools, training centres, computer and self-help workshops, handling of measuring instruments must be
supervised by trained personnel in a responsible manner.
Do not switch the measuring instrument on immediately after it has been taken from a cold to a warm
environment. The condensation that forms might destroy your device. Allow the device to reach room tem-
perature before switching it on.
Do not leave packing materials unattended. This could be a dangerous toy for children.
The measuring instrument may not be operated in explosive areas or on live and hot surfaces (>70 °C).
The device may not be exposed to extreme temperatures, strong vibrations or high humidity. The display is
only ensured in a temperature range from 0 to +50°C.
Apart from a battery change, the device may not be opened or dismantled.
Electronic devices are not toys and must be kept out of the reach of children.

Inserting/replacing the battery

For initial start up or when the battery replacement symbol
battery must be inserted.
To insert the battery, open the battery compartment (9) by sliding it in the direction of the arrow. Remove the
®
battery cover and connect the battery clip with a new battery.
Insert the battery in the battery compartment by holding the battery clip downwards (see „Description of
components").
°
Close the battery compartment carefully. The measuring device is ready for operation.
Do not leave flat batteries in the device. Even batteries that are leak-proof can corrode and

thus release chemicals that could be detrimental to your health or damage the device.
Remove the battery, if the appliance is not to be used for long while, to prevent leaking.
Batteries, including rechargeable batteries, must not be short-circuited or thrown into a
fire. Batteries (non-rechargeable) must not be recharged. There is danger of explosion.
Leaking or damaged batteries/accumulators can cause burning if they come into contact
with the skin. Use appropriate protective gloves in such case.
A suitable battery can be ordered using the order no. 65 25 09. Please order 1 battery.

Button functions

Down key: Is used to set Hi/Lo alarm limits and calibration values, as well as to select the data logger
storage number. It is only active in the setting mode.

Start-up and Operation
For inital start-up remove the protective foils on all test and calibration discs enclosed.
The protective foils are attached depending on the production conditions and must be
removed prior to the reading otherwise this will lead to faulty measurements.
Switching on the meter and performing functional test
Prior to each use, the measuring device is to be checked for correct the zero point and accuracy. For this,
test and calibration discs are enclosed.
The test and calibration discs may be stored in the inside pockets of the holster.
To turn on the device, proceed as follows:
Keep the measuring device away from metallic objects and magnetic fields and press the measuring button
(1) for approx. 3 seconds. „Run" appears on the display and a signal is emitted. Release the measuring
button. The symbol „H" for „Hold" will be displayed. The measuring instrument is ready for the measurement.
The automatic material detection (symbol „A") is always active after switching the product on.
The measuring instrument switches off automatically when no reading is performed within 15 s.
Performing the functional test:
Zero point: While the measuring instrument is switched on, place the sensor (2) on one of the two metal plates
and press the measuring button (1). „0" must appear on the display. Repeat this measurment with the second
metal plate. Here too, „0" must appear on the display. If this is not the case, the measuring instrument must
be calibrated (see chapter „Calibrating the measuring device").
Depending on the carrier material, „Non Ferr" will appear for non-magnetic metals and „Ferr" for magnetic
metals for the measured value.
Measuring point: Following that, check the measuring accuracy by means of the plastic plate enclosed.
Perform the functional test as described above but place the plastic plate in between. The material thickness
is printed on the plastic plate. This value, plus the material tolerance, must be shown on the display. If this is
not the case, the measuring instrument must be calibrated (see chapter „Calibrating the measuring device").
Making Measurements
Turn the measuring device on and perform a functional test. Place the sensor
plane on the metal surface to be measured and press the measuring button.
Make sure that the sensor is not canted or moved. This may lead to faulty
measurements and to damages on the surface.
Wait until the measuring value is displayed. The measuring button may be
pressed periodically for a single reading or up to max. 1 minute for a series of
measurements.
For an individual measurement release the measuring button first and wait until
the measured value is recorded and held on the display showing the symbol „H".
Only after that, remove the measuring instrument from the surface!
During a continuous series of measurements (max. up to 1 minute) hold the measuring button pressed for
the entire duration of the reading. Each measurement requires approx. 1 second until the indicated value is
correctly measured. A series of measurements that is taking longer, will lead to inaccuracies and should be
avoided.
