1. Application

The PM 20 tester is a compact hand-held device for testing surge protective devices and components, for
which either the
Reference voltage at a test current of 1 mA or the
Â
d.c. sparkover voltage
Â
is specified. The integrated sparkover detection monitors the test current and automatically ensures a correct
measurement.
Surge protective devices can be tested either independent of the network or by means of the power supply
unit included in delivery (network-dependent).
This allows to test
the reference voltage (of varistors, Zener diodes, Transzorb diodes, etc.) as well as the
Â
d.c. sparkover voltage (of SPDs, gas discharge tubes, spark gaps, etc.)
Â
also on site and to evaluate these voltages according to the manufacturer's specifications.

2. Safety and application notes

IEC 60417-6182:
Installation,
electrotechnical expertise
The PM 20 tester left the factory in perfect condition. In order to maintain this condition and
to ensure safe operation, the user has to observe all notes and warnings contained in these
operating instructions.
Tests using the PM 20 tester may only be carried out by instructed electricians, who are
familiar with applicable safety regulations (DIN VDE 0104).
The PM 20 tester generates a test voltage (see "Technical data", page 6), which is not life-threatening, but
might cause startle responses (consequential accidents). Therefore, it has to be strictly observed that the
test location is set up on an insulating surface and that no external devices are located in the vicinity of the
two test cables.
When connecting the external test circuit, it has to be ensured that it is touch-proof. Therefore, only the
supplied or approved accessory may be used for tests using the PM 20 tester (see "Accessory included in
delivery", page 6).
