Operating Instructions for the S.M.S. EMDEN model boat, Order No.: 2010
History of the full-size vessel
The S.M.S. Emden was commissioned for the Imperial German Navy in 1910, and was intended for
operations in East Asia; that is why the vessel bore the colourful and attractive tropical paint scheme which
was standard practice in times of peace. In the course of 1910 the Emden steamed to the German colony of
Tsingtao in China. Three peaceful years later Germany entered the First World War, and this initiated the
brief but highly successful career of the Emden as a cruiser, whose purpose was to destroy enemy
commerce. She defeated 25 ships, either sinking them or taking them in prize. The end came on 9.11.1914
when the Emden encountered H.M.A.S. Sydney of the Australian Navy. The German ship carried inferior
armament, and after a short but violent battle the Sydney battered the Emden to the point where Captain
Karl von Mueller was forced to withdraw from battle and beach his ship on the coral reef of North Keeling
Island. Before the two ships met, part of the Emden's crew was put ashore on the island with the aim of
destroying the cable station which was operating there. The landing party, under the command of Lieutenant
von Muecke, managed to return to Germany after an adventurous odyssey across Arabia and Istanbul.
History records one particular characteristic of the Emden, which was the chivalrous behaviour of its crew
towards the crews of seized ships. This was even mentioned in a letter written by Winston Churchill, at that
time the British Navy Minister, in which he demanded that the crew be treated with the utmost respect.
The model
This boat is a member of the GRAUPNER PREMIUM line, a series of particularly high-quality ready-made
models with an unprecedented level of detailing.
The core of this high-quality model is the robust moulded GRP hull, complemented by the superstructure and
deck which are constructed from laser-cut ABS parts. Many of the small items are of metal, and almost
everything is factory-assembled. The hull, parts of the superstructure, the masts and fittings are spray-
finished using semi-matt paints, and the decals are already applied. The many details and scale fittings give
the boat an impressively realistic appearance.
The large deck opening makes it a simple matter to install the RC components, and the procedure is quickly
completed. To prepare the boat for running all you have to do is install the RC components and the drive
batteries, carry out a little soldering, and the model is ready for the water.
The model represents the Emden with the ship's boats swung out, as she would be when lying in port. This
was intentional, as it allows the superstructure to be removed easily.
