Pain following a shingles infection (post-
zoster neuralgia)
Programme 1
Significant pain may remain in the upper body and
facial area following recovery from shingles. A high-
frequency TENS treatment may have a significant effect
on reducing this pain. One electrode is placed direct-
ly alongside the spinal column in the area affected,

Channel 2 with the other electrode positioned at the limit of the
pain radiation in the segment concerned, often on the
stomach side (see fig. 17). If the application of the
electrodes or the stimulation itself is highly unpleasant,
the healthy side of the patient is first treated with the
same electrode application position as that foreseen
for the side with the disorder. The TENS-specific effects
also generate a pain-relieving effect on the side af-

fected, even though this is not being directly treated!
Encouraging blood circulation

This stimulation current application on the hand (see
fig. 18) has a positive effect on blood circulation
around the whole body! A stimulation of at least 20
