Particle spectrum of the medication nebulizer
The site of deposition in the airways or the lungs de-
pends on the droplet size of the medication mist
(aerosol). Aerosol particles with a large diameter are
deposited in the upper airways while aerosol parti-
cles with a small diameter reach the alveoli.

The majority of medication particles have a size of
3.7 µm (MMAD)*. 90 % of the particles are respira-
ble.

The MMAD depends on the set flow. A high flow pro-
duces an aerosol with small particles that penetrate
deeply into the lungs. A lower flow produces an aero-
sol with larger particles that are deposited in the up-
per airways or the nasopharynx where they become
effective.
When using a flowmeter the flow is adjustable so that
the site of medication deposition can be controlled.

Instructions for use Inhalette
The toggle switch valve (2M85674) has a fixed flow
of 10 L/min and thus produces an aerosol with an
MMAD of 3.7 µm.
Measurement of the aerosol spectrum was carried
out by the Fraunhofer Institut für Toxikologie und
Aerosolforschung (Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicolo-
gy and Aerosol Research).
