4.5 Pour the sample to be tested into
the funnel.
4.6 Turn on the vacuum source and
open the three-way valve (turn to 6
o'clock).
4.7 At completion of filtration, close
the valve (turn to 9 o'clock) or turn off
the vacuum pump. Remove the funnel
and transfer the membrane filter for
gravimetric, optical, chemical or other
analysis.
4.8 The grid printed on the
membrane facilitates visual evaluation
of the residue. The grid optically
divides the filtration surface into 130
squares, each measuring 3.1 x 3.1
mm. Therefore, one square equals
1/130 of the overall area (if you use
the 6980103 stainless steel filter
support with a diameter of 47 mm,
available as an accessory, the
filtration area is reduced to 9.6 cm
hence, one grid square equals
2
1/100 of the 9.6 cm
).
5. Cleaning and Care
of Stainless Steel Filter
Holders
To ensure a long service life stainless
steel filter holders should be cleaned
prior to initial use and after each
filtration run.
Proceed as follows:
5.1 Disassemble the filter holder.
5.2 Use soft brushes, warm water
and a gentle commercial laboratory
detergent (for metal, glass, plastic)
to clean all parts.
5.3 Rinse the parts with hot water
and then with distilled water. Drying
can be hastened by rinsing with a
70% alcohol solution.
5.4 Dry the parts in a drying oven.
Please do not use towels or cloth for
drying because they may deposit
lint on the filter holders.
6. Maintenance of Quick-
Lock Clamps on Stainless
Steel Funnels
The quick-lock clamps tend to widen
after frequent use, and must be
tightened to prevent leakage. Grasp
the clamp with a pair of flat – nose
pliers and apply slight pressure to
narrow the clamp's opening.
Important Note:
Just lightly push down on the quick-
lock clamp to secure the filter holder
parts; there is no need to force the
clamp down to it's full extent.
7. Maintenance of Stainless
Steel Three-Way Valves
If it becomes difficult to open and
2
close any of the valves, the valves
should be removed for cleaning,
drying and lubrication (e.g.
generously lubricate with high-grade
heavy grease). To remove a valve,
proceed as follows:
7.1 First remove the knurled nut and
the washer from the back of the valve.
7.2 Detach the valve.
If valves from several filtration filter
holders have been disassembled,
then each valve must be replaced in
the same tapered stem guide from
which it was removed. The valve stem
guide has been precisely machined
to the valve's individual specifications
to make a leak tight fit.
