Startup

5.1

Starting up the system

DANGER
Uncontrolled system movement
When starting up, if the linear encoder system is part of a
closed loop system whose parameters have not yet been
set, the system may perform uncontrolled movements.
This could result in personal injury and equipment
damage.
► Persons must keep away from the system's
hazardous zones.
► Startup must be performed only by trained technical
personnel.
► Observe the safety instructions of the equipment or
system manufacturer.
1. Check connections for tightness and correct polarity.
Replace damaged connections or devices.
2. Turn on the system.
3. Check measured values in the controller and reset if
necessary.

Check system function

The sensor head includes an additional amplitude
monitoring function and uses a bi-colored LED to indicate
whether the sensor is operating normally or if it is outside
the function range (see Tab. 5-1).
The LED is on the front on the side opposite
the cable outlet (see Fig. 3-2 and
Fig. 3-2 on page 8).

Check all functions as follows after assembling the position
measuring system or replacing the sensor head:
1. Switch on the sensor head supply voltage.
2. Move the sensor head along the entire measuring
range and check that all signals are output. The LED
must not indicate any errors. Troubleshooting steps are
described in section 10.2 on page 30.
3. Check that the count direction corresponds with the
direction of travel and that the change in position
shown in the controller corresponds with the actual
travel path. Correct the controller parameters, if
necessary.

Operating notes

To ensure safe operation, always position the sensor
head above the tape and within the measurement
range.
Check and record the function of the linear encoder
system and all associated components on a regular
basis.
If there are malfunctions in the position measuring
system, take it out of service and secure it against
unauthorized use (also refer to section 10.2
Troubleshooting on page 30).
To prevent position detection errors, do not exceed the
maximum movement speed (see Tab. 6-2 on page 20)!
