2. Installation sites and installation notes

In principle, we recommend the installation of several smoke detec-
tors in the building or in the apartment. On any account, in multistory
buildings, one smoke detector must be installed on each floor. This
allows for a timely and effective warning in case a fire starts.
Smoke detectors must be installed in a way that secures the way to
the bedroom (entrance area, hall and stairway). They must also be
audible through closed bedroom doors in the case of an alarm.
The installation of the smoke detector must be in the center of the
ceiling.
Pointed ceilings are an exception from this rule.
The smoke detector must not be installed on pointed ceilings. When
mounting on the ceiling a distance of 1 meter to the highest point of
the room should be observed. An ideal installation point would be on
a bracket or a roof beam.
An air accumulation occurs near walls and in particular in the corners
of rooms as well as in pointed ceilings. Such features hold off
ascending smoke. For this reason a smoke detector should be
installed at least 50 cm away from corners. If this rule is not observed
the smoke detector will be ineffective and it will set off the alarm too
late. In case of emergency the smoke detector would be ineffective
and would set off the alarm too late.
Please note that a windowsill tremendously deflects the smoke and
creates an area of still air. The ascending smoke can not activate the
smoke detector (see sketch).
